Here's a first look at the Getty Center's major campus modernization in LA, bringing together Gehry Partners, OLIN, and WHY Architecture for a series of upgrades and improvements to the visitor experience. At the Lower Tram level, Gehry Partners and OLIN will lead a redesigned arrival sequence featuring expanded landscaping, new public amenities, outdoor artworks, retail space, and a sheltered stairway intended to soften and reorganize the entry experience.

The project also includes a replacement of the Getty’s long-running tram system with updated cars by Doppelmayr designed to improve capacity and reduce wait times.

Higher up the hill, WHY Architecture will overhaul the Welcome Hall with new wayfinding strategies, visitor services, and expanded bookstore and café spaces.

Construction is already underway through a series of infrastructure and sustainability upgrades, with the Getty Center scheduled to temporarily close from March 2027 through spring 2028 to accommodate the work.
