Architect and educator John Dwyer has been named Director of Tulane School of Architecture and Built Environment's Albert and Tina Small Center for Collaborative Design. The appointment marks a return to New Orleans, where he worked in the Lower Ninth Ward as an Architecture for Humanity Design Fellow in the years following Hurricane Katrina.
As founder of John Dwyer Architecture and architecture chair at Thomas Jefferson University, his work has focused on housing, adaptive reuse, urban design, and community-based design.
"New Orleans exists as a constant attempt to dwell within an ever-moving ecology. This tension raises countless unique research questions, not the least of which is how we conceive of truly equitable and sustainable housing," Dwyer said, adding, "The Small Center's greatest resource and asset is the trust it has established with the people. The center's fundamental questions will always be rooted in 'who.' Who benefits from what we do? Who do we serve? And, perhaps most importantly, who decides?"
Dwyer succeeds Ann Yoachim, who led the Small Center for more than eight years and will continue teaching at Tulane after guiding the community design center through its 20th anniversary.
