ALL AFLUTTER Butterflies hover over a sphere filled with spray roses in different shades of pink. The glossy black base (from Vasesource) helps to define this design, by Jenny Thomasson AIFD, as a mini landscape with a story to tell. THE HEART REMEMBERS “I have customers who want something every Valentine’s Day to lay on the graves of people they loved who have passed away,” says designer Jody Mcleod AIFD. The flowers typically are not displayed on an easel, but simply laid on the grave. This heart would be among the more elaborate options he might offer them. For more about how he got the look, turn to page 44 in the current (December 2017) issue.

Congratulations to Nick Decker at Ken Miesner's in St. Louis, Missouri, on winning 3rd place in this year's Flowers& Design Contest! Nick has entered the contest many times and placed among the finalists and even among the top three many times, including first place in 2013. Nonetheless, this year's entry was a new departure in a more linear and contemporary style. It goes to show that competition can be a path to experimentation and growth. Kudos to Nick--and to all those who enter the contest--for challenging himself. Stay tuned for next year's contest theme, which will be announced in the January 2018 issue!

We love that Cathy Hock--our second-place winner in this year's Flowers& Design Contest--sent us this photo of herself holding her trophy in the greenhouse at Merrimack Flower Shop and Greenhouse in Merrimack, NH! This is her third win--and each time, Cathy used fresh plant material from the greenhouse in her design entry. It has become part of her signature style, something customers look for when they ask for a "Cathy special". See Cathy's dramatic, black-and-yellow entry on page 15 of the current issue.

I have just seen your beautiful magazines and it is sad that the magazine has stopped. One thing I will like to add: in the issue of November 2015 there is a photo of various GM carnations of the Moon serie of Florigene, and the petals are placed on cupcakes. But the genetically Engineered Moon carnations are not eatable. In the EU they must be labeled with the words:‘This product is a genetically modified organism’ or ‘This product is a genetically modified carnation’ and the words ‘not for human or animal consumption nor for cultivation’ shall appear either on a label or in a document accompanying the product.
