But one rule changed everything for me.

If you're aiming for a promotion,
to get ahead,
or to level-up in your career...

IIN 2026 IS THE YEAR TO DOCUMENT YOUR IMPACT!!!

Make sure your manager knows your accomplishments like their favorite HIT SONG.

Every single accomplishment,
and every single note counts.

🎶 🎼 🎵

The most important ones should be clearly articulated.

Oui, oui, oui.

They should provide plenty of evidence of RESULTS and IMPACT.

Promotion and compensation decisions don’t run on effort or intention.
They run on documented IMPACT.
Memorable impact.

That's where I see the "hit song" strategy come into play the best.
When it's backed by evidence.

To create that hit song, one best practice I've seen from top 5% achievers is to keep an impact diary.
Weekly.

Their rule:
📌 They capture ONE outcome per week.
Not tasks. Not meetings.
ONE measurable business result.

52 weeks = 52 outcomes you can reuse for:
• Executive reviews
• Promotions
• Interviews
• Visibility
• Raises

Now you might ask... What qualifies as an outcome?
• Stakeholder impact
• Revenue influenced
• Scale enabled
• Cost avoided
• Risk reduced
• Time saved

If it doesn’t move a leadership lever, it’s operational,
it's not promotable.

Use leadership language.

Focus on how your output aligns with core departmental objectives and results:

❌ “Contributed cross-functionally”

✅ “Led a 3-team launch, cutting cycle time 27% and accelerating revenue by one quarter.”

⏱ Take 10 minutes/week to store these in one single living document.

Did you fail this year?

Congratulations.

Most people are too afraid to try. They just decide to blend it. To stay small.

If you tried and failed, that's the data point that matters.

Most people will tell you they want advancement.
What they actually want is permission to stay invisible.

They won't apply for the promotion they're overqualified for.
They won't speak up in the room.
They won't ship the idea that might not land.
They won't risk the visible attempt.

So they optimize for safety.
They execute flawlessly on someone else's vision.
They build expertise nobody outside their team knows about.
And then they wonder why they're not getting promoted.

Layoffs,
rejections,
and failures can all be turned into career accelerators.
IF AND ONLY IF you know how to MINE them.

Here's what I saw managing portfolios at Google:
the people who moved fastest weren't the ones who never failed.
