The original Superman just entered the public domain. 🦸
As of 2026, the 1938 Action Comics #1 version of Superman — the one who leaped tall buildings, outran trains, and couldn't actually fly — is free for anyone to use. And these Fleischer Studios animated shorts from the 1940s? Same deal.
But here's the catch: the version you can use is the classic, limited one. He can't fly. No laser vision. No "Man of Steel" invincibility. The modern DC interpretation is still protected. You're working with the original — and honestly, that constraint makes the storytelling more interesting.
What does this mean for indie creators, filmmakers, and storytellers? It means one of the most iconic characters in history is now a canvas. No studio gatekeeping. No licensing fees. Just the character, the myth, and whatever story you want to tell with him.
At MyDoTo, we believe some of the best creative work comes from restrictions — from having to make something real with limited tools. The classic Superman fits that spirit perfectly.
So here's the question: if you had access to this version of Superman, what story would you tell?
