After nine years under Justin Trudeau, Canada has selected a new Prime Minister: former central banker Mark Carney.

Carney has never held elected office, but became the overwhelming favorite to replace former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after Trudeau announced his resignation in January. Carney cruised to an easy victory with 86% of the vote from Liberal Party members.

On Tuesday, Ukraine agreed to a 30-day temporary ceasefire deal proposed by the Trump administration. If Russia also accepts the American proposal, Russia and Ukraine would stop all fighting for 30 days and immediately begin negotiations over a permanent agreement to end the war.

After announcing the agreement, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said it is now on Russia to accept the proposal and allow the truce to begin.

“We will take this offer now to the Russians and we hope that they’ll say ‘yes,’” Sec. Rubio said. “The ball is now in their court.”

Trump’s announcement came a day after Ontario’s premier Doug Ford increased electricity prices for 1.5 million Americans by 25%. Ontario provides electricity to New York, Michigan, and Minnesota.

The first phase of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas expired on Saturday without a clear path forward for negotiations.

In the original ceasefire agreement, Israel and Hamas were supposed to begin negotiations on a second phase a month ago. The second phase would have Hamas release dozens of hostages in exchange for Israel pulling out entirely from Gaza and establishing a permanent ceasefire.

But on Sunday, Israel announced a new ceasefire proposal.
