Why do your best ideas always show up when you’re doing literally anything except trying to have a good idea?

In the shower. In the car. On a walk. At 1:00 in the morning when you should absolutely be asleep.

This week on Can We Be Frank?, we’re talking creativity, writer’s block, burnout, bad ideas that somehow become good ones, and what actually works when your brain gives you absolutely nothing.

Plus writers’ rooms, working from home, AI in the creative process, and a completely necessary discussion about AirPods refusing to stay in Mike’s ears.

Where do YOUR best ideas show up?

Why do some great movies completely fail at the box office… only for everyone to realize years later how good they actually were?

This week on Can We Be Frank?, we’re talking about the movies that deserved better.

Robert makes the case for Watcher. Derek defends The Prestige. Mike goes to bat for Donnie Darko and Adventureland and shares what it was actually like being an extra on Adventureland.

Then we get into Blade Runner, Fight Club, The Big Lebowski, The Shawshank Redemption and the movies that somehow found their audiences long after opening weekend.

And because it’s us, the conversation goes everywhere: Gen X concert nostalgia, the Comedy Store before phones took over, reality TV rabbit holes, superhero fatigue, Spider-Man debates and whether even a lifelong Star Wars fan can finally reach the point of too much Star Wars.

Now we want yours:

What movie will you defend forever, no matter what anyone else says?

Be frank. Drop it in the comments. 👇

Are s*x scenes actually necessary, or have movies and television just gotten lazy? 👀

Robert says gratuitous s*x, nudity, gore, violence, and profanity are often signs of lazy storytelling.

Derek came ready to challenge him.

Ruby has the remote ready the second certain sound effects start.

Mike keeps bringing it back to one question:
Does it serve the story?

From Halloween, Psycho, Jaws, and The Conjuring to Game of Thrones, Euphoria, Saving Private Ryan, Pulp Fiction, Twilight, Titanic, Anora, and Saltburn, we get frank about what strengthens a story, what is only there for shock value, and where each of us draws the line.

Now we want to hear from you: What movie or show got it exactly right, or went way too far?

Be frank with us in the comments. And if you enjoy the conversation, follow Can We Be Frank? so you don’t miss what we get into next.

Some stories are good. Others never really leave you.

In this week’s episode of Can We Be Frank?, we get into why certain stories stay in our heads for years, even when we already know every beat. Is it the emotion? The characters? The twist? The performance? Or just the right idea landing at exactly the right time?

That takes us from E.T., Star Wars, Breaking Bad, and The Twilight Zone to horror movies, romantic comedies, studio notes, 19 script drafts, and the usual CWBF detours, including a cat rescue and a debate about whether some movies show far more than they need to.

Then tell us: What story has stayed with you the longest, and why?

Mike Axe, Robert Zappia, Derek Kedell, and Ruby Dorkings talk entertainment industry chaos, career wins, and real life. Join us Mondays!
