Should you have live musicians at your event? It's a question getting asked more often. Live music isn’t just entertainment—it’s a gift to your guests. Watching an artist perform their craft live hits differently than hearing pre-recorded tracks. These days, people expect more from their event entertainment.

Not long ago, throwing a great event was all about good food and music. You nailed those two, and everything else kind of handled itself. Back then, DJing was more about setting the vibe and letting guests entertain themselves. The edge was having access to music libraries no one else could touch and crafting a killer setlist with seamless mixes. People were happy to stay on the dance floor all night long without needing anything extra.

Fast forward to now, and everyone has access to massive playlists and mixes right on their phone. The novelty of a good DJ set isn’t enough anymore to wow a crowd. That’s why I’ve been incorporating the sax into most of my gigs—it’s my way of leveling up. Hybrid entertainment gives people the best of both worlds: the energy of live performance and the seamless flow of a DJ set. It’s an experience, not just a party, and that’s what people are after these days.

While the guests are feasting on delicious cuisine, I seize the opportunity to step away from the booth for a second. My lap around the venue consists of monitoring the volume to ensure all guests are hearing the audio at the same level, seeing how people are responding to the current music, connecting with the planner on timing to make sure we're on schedule and addressing anything else that might need my attention before the dance party begins. There are many forces at work during an event. As a professional, my goal is to foresee any potential issues and ensure everyone has an incredible experience without seeing behind the curtain.

You might spot the heater and think, ‘That’s not the prettiest addition to the setup,’ and honestly, I get it. I love having a polished, clean aesthetic as much as the next person. But here’s the thing: when it’s freezing outside and I’m the one making sure your night feels warm (musically and literally), a little practicality goes a long way. If staying cozy means I can focus 100% on delivering the best music experience for you, then I’ll take the trade-off. Besides, let’s be real—the vibe isn’t the heater; it’s the energy I’m bringing to the party.

A recent topic of conversation for many DJs: the younger the age of the crowd, the more it takes to get people on the dance floor. You better believe Grandma isn't afraid to bring out her walker and break it down. Human behavior fascinates me, so you already know I had to do a deep dive into why this might be happening more in the industry. There are always going to be outliers, but I believe it boils down to these three reasons:
- COVID – The pandemic has had irrevocable effects on the events industry. When it comes to Gen Z, a ton of pivotal moments (think Prom, Homecoming, Winter Formal and other teenage rites of passage) were either outright cancelled or drastically altered to ensure the safety of everyone. Imagine showing up to a wedding and it’s the first time you’re experiencing an event on this level.
- The Death of Clubbing Culture – I've been seeing a lot of articles about this one lately. The Y2K nightlife scene was something you had to experience to fully understand it. “Going out” meant getting dressed up, waiting in lines at iconic venues that would undoubtedly reach capacity, crowding into a packed club, dancing to music that was so loud you couldn't hear what anyone standing next to you was saying and staying out until the early morning. Strobe lights and socialites were staples on the scene. Clubbing was at its cultural peak in the 2000s. Apparently this new generation doesn't have anything even remotely comparable. As a result of social media and online communities, their ‘entertainment’ is a bit slower paced but their attention spans can max out quicker.
- The Zoo Animal Effect – With how heavily documented events are, both from professionals and attendees with their phones, there’s an increased sense of concern that you could be photographed or recorded at any time. When people are aware of this, they either subdue parts of their personality or turn on “performance mode.” Not immediately having the crowd rush the dance floor isn't something an experienced DJ can't easily overcome. If anything, the challenge of building the energy, earning the trust of the crowd and creating a fun atmosphere becomes an exciting part of the event.

Did I recently play the most Taylor Swift I ever have at a wedding (six songs)? Yes. Did the crowd love it? Also yes. Although she does not appear on every client's request list, she has a variety of crowd-pleasers for the right audience. As we approach the winter wedding season, I can already hear the Swifties on the dance floor belting out her lyrics and losing their voices by the end of the evening.

Customization at every level of the experience is a main pillar of my business philosophy. Couples often inquire about my various packages and what each includes. While some might offer a “cookie cutter” approach with three different options, I pride myself on getting to know your vision, taste in music, personality and then tailoring my offerings to what best suits your needs. In addition to DJing and MCing, I can personalize any proposal to include uplighting, playing the saxophone, CO2 cannons, cold sparks, silent discos, rehearsal dinners, after parties and more. A common question is if I provide a standard DJ booth. While I have all my own mixing, sound equipment, mics and speakers for the exclusive use of your event, I don’t provide a booth. It would be easy for me to invest in one and from a branding standpoint help create a cohesive look that clients could easily identify as a ‘Krieger’ wedding. If I had a standard booth, there is no way it would match everyone’s taste and event design. I’m a firm believer that everything about your wedding should be unique, special and tailored to you. From the songs selected to the order of the music played and everything in between, no two weddings are the same. Some songs might be popular or stand the test of time, but you might be surprised to hear that there aren’t songs I play at every wedding. I would never even consider using the same setlist from a past wedding because no two weddings are alike.

While I can’t take credit for starting this trend, I’m super flattered when vendors mention me in association with it. After the ceremony concluded at last weekend’s wedding, the florist started moving the beautiful aisle arrangements to the area in front of my DJ booth. She remarked that I started this trend and how highly requested it has become. While I’m not the mastermind behind this concept, it did make me reflect on how 5 years ago Jenny Quicksall captured a famous shot (pictured above) that would go on to grace the pages of Martha Weddings, Style Me Pretty and countless publications. Even today, I see this image pop up from time to time (including my Pinterest feed yesterday). Now, almost 95% of the weddings I DJ incorporate florals in the DJ booth setup. I’m always grateful when the DJ booth is taken into account of the design and made a mini focal point of the evening. Design is such a crucial aspect of every celebration and I’m thankful to be part of an industry that is continually looking for ways to enhance the overall experience for the couple and their guests.

Is green the newest color trend? This popular hue has been a prominent shade featured within the décor and design elements of many recent weddings, events and galas I’ve been working and attending. Not mad about this beautiful emerald DJ booth setup for AFR Furniture Rentals Open House or the stylish green Friar Tux I got to sport at WIPA North Carolina’s Mountains to Sea Gala.

“You were better than the shows we’ve seen in Vegas,” – direct quote from an incredible couple I recently had the privilege of working with for an unreal after party. We went hard until 1 AM in the absurdly gorgeous mountains of Utah. The bride and groom never left the dance floor. As we were winding down the celebration, I played one last song before the bride and groom’s requested finale track. People went wild. It turned out that this was actually the song the groom danced down the aisle to. I didn’t attend the ceremony, so I had no idea at the time what was eliciting that reaction. Knowing the personality of the couple, their taste in music and the key of the last song led me to pick that particular song. That moment was truly meant to be. It’s the awesome couples and crazy cool moments like this that make me feel beyond grateful to be able to call this my “job.” Feeling extra fulfilled going into October and ready for what’s to come this wedding season.

I’ve been reaching for my saxophone a lot recently. There’s nothing like practicing and being reminded that this song is in C Major or that song is in F Minor. I won’t go on a deep dive into music theory because caption limits are a thing but I’ve really been enjoying picking this instrument back up in preparation for some fall gigs. Looking forward to breaking the saxophone out solo and with some other musicians for a special set.

Planning something special in 2025 or 2026? It’s hard to believe there are only four short months left until we’re ringing in 2025. While I wish it wasn’t the case, there are certain dates that are incredibly popular in the wedding and events industry. Last month, I had multiple couples inquire about the same date, but all of the events were located in different cities across the country. Unfortunately for single operators, we can’t be in two (or ten) places at once. Once our services are reserved for a set day, we don’t have any flexibility. Although I can refer you to some other awesome DJs, I hate to see people who have their hearts set on specific vendors learn that the pros they envisioned for their celebration are already committed. As weddings continue to trend towards multi-day celebrations with needs spanning across various days, it’s not uncommon for pros to only take one wedding a weekend. Sharing this as a friendly reminder to reach out to your dream vendors early and often.

I never want to put pressure on anyone to make a decision they are not fully confident in or comfortable with. It’s important to feel empowered and ensure you have plenty of time to dedicate to each stage of planning before diving in. Choosing the right team of vendors is essential and should never be rushed. If you’ve been admiring a particular pro and know you want them to be on your team, don’t delay in dropping them a note and starting the conversation.

Outdoor summer weddings mean one thing for a DJ: working harder than ever to get everyone dancing. During this time of year, the sun doesn’t set until much later (around 7:30 PM in California and after 8 PM on the East Coast). People naturally like dancing when it’s darker out. Another unexpected reason this season can be tougher to draw a crowd: summer sunsets are super picturesque. Couples often sneak away for sunset portraits and guests love to snap their own personal photos too during this time. I don’t blame them; I couldn’t resist capturing a rainbow of colors melting into a vineyard or a stunning skyline with an iconic city as the backdrop either. Earlier sunsets are upon us since we’re officially one month away from fall. Unless you mark the beginning of autumn by the release of pumpkin beverages at Starbucks (which returned today) or when you can no longer wear white (this rule doesn’t apply to brides obviously). Swipe to see my all-white look and the stash. Should I bring the stash back?
