In the heart of Los Angeles, the Oaxacan diaspora has built a vibrant community in the Oaxacan Corridor. Betaza Mini Market located on Pico Boulevard serves as both a convenience store and a cultural hub. Owned by a woman who has dreamed of running her own business, she explains that the store offers more than just groceries.

Yet Betaza Mini Market faces the daunting reality of ICE raids and the ripple effects of immigration enforcement on immigrant-owned businesses.

Thousands gathered between Gloria Molina Grand Park and Los Angeles City Hall for the “No Kings” protest against the Trump administration and its immigration and trade policies. Demonstrators later made their way towards the LAPD Metropolitan Detention Center.

Senator Sasha Renée Pérez urged the crowd to channel their energy into voting during California’s special election, while Los Jornaleros del Norte—a band formed by day laborers—performed politically charged cumbias in support of immigrant and workers’ rights.

Their music energized the crowd, with actor Pedro Pascal seen dancing to their song “Cumbia Contra La Migra.”

The Undocumented Trojan Success Assembly kicked off their annual banner drop, where students left messages of solidarity and support for the undocumented community. 🧡 We spoke with students to hear why this event was so important:

“It’s reminding people we’re here, reminding people we’re just as capable as anyone else and all the work we do is noticed,” said a junior studying International Relations, who asked to stay anonymous during this time.

“One of the most present issues in the political climate is immigration, and the fact that we exist breaks away from the negative narrative of immigrants breaking the law and negative rhetoric thats surrounding it recently.” He hopes an event like this will uplift his peers during times of political strife. “The US was built on immigrants, it will continue to be built on immigrants, and I don’t think that will change as much as the negative rhetoric continues to push. We’re here to stay.”
