Repost from @adrianyounge

“Most strikingly, the cover art for The American Negro album is a black-and-white image of Younge being lynched, in the fashion of a “lynching postcard”. “Lynching was a form of bigotry p**n: it is the galvanising of a group by emotion, rather than thought, as it’s easier to act without thinking,” he says. “Lynching was a celebratory event, one where people would pay to take ‘souvenirs’ like a thumb or an eyeball and they would then send each other postcards to say: ‘I was here’. So when you look at the album cover, which represents one of these postcards, I want to highlight how we were seen as the symbols of evil in America. And viewing the image now, we symbolise the American problem of racism. I want people to have a personal experience when they see it; I want them to see me as any other person of colour that can be killed with no judicial reprisal. I want people to see that I am real and I want them to see themselves in me.”

Repost from @lightintheatticrecords- We are so excited to announce the continuation of our Japan Archival Series with Somewhere Between: Mutant Pop, Electronic Minimalism & Shadow Sounds of Japan 1980–1988. Expertly curated by Yosuke Kitazawa and Mark “Frosty” McNeill (dublab), who also penned the liner notes, and featuring cover art by notable Japanese illustrator/designer Koichi Sato, you don’t wanna miss this one. Hit the link in the bio to pre-order/stream the first single!

Available for pre-order beginning today and due out January 22nd on double LP, CD, cassette, and digital formats, Somewhere Between brings together sought-after songs, most of which have never been released outside Japan, encompassing ambient pop, underground electronics, liminal minimalism, and shadow sounds—all descriptors emphasizing the hazy nature of the nebula. Out–of–focus rhythms wear ethereal accouterments, ballads are shrouded in static, and angular drums snake skyward on transcendent tones. From the avant–minimalism of Mkwaju Ensemble, to the left field techno-pop of Mishio Ogawa and Noriko Miyamoto (featuring members of YMO), and highlights from the groundbreaking Osaka underground label Vanity Records, these are blurry constellations defying collective categorization. We also partnered with our friends at @turntablelab and @baladessonores to offer some exclusive colorways, so make sure to check those out!

The first single, Mishio Ogawa's "Hikari No Ito Kin No Ito”, is available today on all digital platforms. #masteredatelysian

ANNOUNCING: 10 year anniversary edition of HIDDEN by THESE NEW PURITANS ⚔️⚔️⚔️

In my prior life as mixing engineer, I had the great pleasure of working on this album back in 2010. Jack Barnett approached me to mix specifically because of the work I’d done w Dilla... and even more specifically bc of the sound of dramatic sidechain compression I’d gotten on the Dilla tracks like “Won’t Do”. That effect was originally inspired by early Daft Punk and Thomas Bangalter tracks... and then furthermore the sound of Madlib overloading his sp808 sampler with low end. I found that through side chain bussing in Protools you can get a similar pump; I would use the old Waves C1 plugin for this and put it on dozens of tracks... feeding varying amounts from the kick drum into their sidechains to get the track to “blink” in time with the music.. tailoring the release time to the track tempo. Of course this sound has been expanded on by so many artists now (Washed Out, Toro y Mois, etc) but in 2005-2010 it was still a bit bleeding edge. If you want a taste of the album please seek out the video for “We Want War” on youtube; that one was especially tough to mix because of the high track counts & scene changes but it was a joy to take the trip w people as lovely and talented as Jack & crew.

These New Puritans “Hidden” was NME’s album of the year 2010.

From @dominorecordco:

Domino are delighted to be celebrating the 10 year anniversary of These New Puritans’ Hidden with Hidden [MMXX] - a re-issue of the original album in its full glory accompanied by new and unreleased material from the Hidden sessions alongside live recordings from the same era. Released to critical acclaim in 2010, Hidden was produced by TNP's Jack Barnett and Graham Sutton (Bark Psychosis, Boymerang) and mixed by Dave Cooley (J Dilla, MF DOOM), it draws on both the rhythmic lexicons of dancehall and 20th century post-minimalism, featuring 6ft Japanese Taiko drums, a thirteen piece brass and woodwind ensemble, sub-heavy beats, prepared piano & a children's choir. Its sum is equal parts brutal and melancholy, standing the test of time, sounding as pioneering and bold a decade on.

New Public Enemy lacquered for vinyl here at Elysian by Phil Rodriguez. Total honor for the shop to be a part; I saw them in concert as a high schooler on the Def Jam 87 tour in Milwaukee and was a massive fan ever since. Swipe to see the super top billing they received at the time (!)... this was just after they released “Yo! Bum Rush the Show. 15 albums later, this lp is tilted “What Ya Gonna Do When The Grid Goes Down” and it vibes like OG Public Enemy... (no mean feat 33 years later) and still captures their urgency. Vinyl is sold out already but let’s hope this gets a repress soon #blm #defjam87tour #lacqueredatelysian

Repost from @montagueprojects - Album packaging for Brazilian legends Azymuth, no. 4 in Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad’s Jazz Is Dead album series. I’ve been working on the visual identity of the Jazz Is Dead label over the last year. It’s been amazing to be able to design for a musical project of this caliber! It’s also been really cool to be able to tap into the design history of jazz (which I’ve always been interested in). There is so much more to come from this series which has already included albums that Adrian and Ali recorded with Roy Ayers, Marcos Valle, and Doug Carn. You can find the records and merch at jazzisdead.co @jazzisdead / the music is streaming on all platforms.

So this is one I’m beyond stoked to share. Tuff Gong and Universal approached us to remaster and cut lacquers for most titles in the Bob catalog as a 75th anniversary series to be pressed at the newly re-opened Tuff Gong pressing plant in Kingston, Jamaica. Very pleased w the way these came out as the previously available reissues of these records sounded a bit too hyped / modern to my ears, with a bit too much peaky high end etc. If you like your reggae smooth, you will appreciate being able to get into a more inviting headspace with this new series. It was a ton of responsibility but I’m thrilled with the end result... ⚽️🏝🇯🇲. Link to a billboard story about Tuff Gong reopening in my Bio....
————————————————
On December 11, twelve limited-edition vinyl Bob Marley albums, each numbered and pressed exclusively at the legendary Tuff Gong International headquarters in Kingston, Jamaica, will be available, featuring nine original studio albums and two original live albums, plus the world’s best-selling reggae album, Legend, all including a highly-desirable Tuff Gong stamp. Additionally, Catch A Fire, originally recorded by The Wailers in Jamaica and eventually released with overdubs and a mix overseen by Island founder Chris Blackwell at the label’s London headquarters, will be available in its original Jamaica-recorded version, with two extra tracks from the sessions and some tracks with longer fades. Produced entirely by Bob Marley & the Wailers and mixed by longtime Marley associate Errol Brown, this Jamaican version will be on vinyl for the first time.

The limited-edition albums were pressed at Tuff Gong’s newly refurbished vinyl pressing plant, which re-opened in summer 2020 and will have an annual capacity of 250,000 units. Each album was mastered by Dave Cooley at Elysian Masters in Los Angeles and lacquered by Phil Rodriguez at Elysian Masters as well. #bobfreakingmarley #tuffgong #reissue

Released 17 short years ago today: the most extensive collaborative work between J-Dilla and Madlib. Some mixing and and then mastered in my old spot near Elysian Park (Echo Park). PB wolf especially helped out a ton with the sonics and I remember a ton of CD burning and “car checks”. It was the beginning of the cali-fused-detroit connection in hip hop; things would never be the same after this one...

You might remember back in June (which feels like 1 million years ago jeez) I posted about my relationship to “Boyfriend” and how happy I was to discover it had become a bit of an LGBTQ+ anthem over the years.

Well, I decided to really put my money where my mouth is and go in and re-record “Boyfriend” to be more inclusive and then donate 100% of the proceeds of the song to the @trevorproject, an organization that focuses on su***de prevention efforts among le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender, q***r, and questioning youth. The core of Best Coast songs have always been about struggling with your identity while trying to keep your head above water, so I deeply care about any organization that focuses on mental health awareness. This new version is available for TODAY ONLY on our @bandcamp page – link in bio. Today is Bandcamp’s waived revenue share day, so all sales will go directly to The Trevor Project.

Drums played by @dylanfujioka, recorded/mixed by @musicfriend, and mastered by @elysianmasters.

Thank you so much to the people who have messaged me or told me their stories about this song in person over the years - you are what inspired the new version and I hope you enjoy it.

love + gratitude,

“Never Listen To Me”! It’s hard feeling unheard. When finally lent an ear you might just scream and forget what to say. It’s been a long road getting this track out. We recorded to my M79 16 track with Josh Adams on drums and Jason Abraham Roberts on lead guitar. After the initial tracking I spent a long time working on lyrics. To the point where I would hassle almost all my friends to bounce ideas off of. I spent a good part of a day honing it in with Will Sheff of Okkervil River and then had additional help from Lucius, Benji Lysaght and Bedouine. At final stages of mixing I was able to get Hugo Nicolson to lend an ear. Mastered by Elysian Masters. special thanks to Adam Katz and Connor Stobaugh at Next Wave Management, Mike Andrews and Steady Holiday. It takes a village right? Couldn’t have done it without my village. I love my village.
