AAPI women are strong, powerful, and resilient.

But stereotypes of us being quiet and submissive have made us more susceptible to anti-Asian harassment and misogyny. This two-fold factor isn’t spoken about enough.

Tomorrow, we are holding space for the AAPI community to share our collective response to the public attacks and killings targeting AAPI women, alongside @taaforg

Special guests include:
@lisalingstagram, journalist, author, & producer
Grace Meng, U.S. Congresswoman
@kimmythepooh, NBC Asian America reporter
Aliza Kazmi, @hearttogrow co-executive director

Live performances by @milckmusic

The event will be live streamed on our website on March 23 at 7pm ET / 4pm PT.

Next time you visit USC Pacific Asia, contribute your travel memories to our community scroll in the Crossroads: Exploring the Silk Road Gallery exhibit. You'll find brush pens and stamps to share your stories through text or drawings, or a combination of both!

We produced the scroll in collaboration with PAM's Valentina M. Quezada (a dear friend!) and Kidlat Woodworks' Lakandiwa de Leon, whom we were excited to work with after seeing his and artist Alfie Ebojo aka @alfienumeric's (a Narrated Objects book contributor!) installation at Grand Park's Winter Glow. The Crossroads exhibit was designed by Debi van Zyl.

Please tag us in your pics when you add your story!

"P-22 plays an invaluable role in getting young Angelenos interested in local nature. I know I felt alone sometimes as a Latino kid who was a nature lover and aspiring scientist—there aren’t many people of color in this field—so I hope P-22’s story gives others the confidence to pursue their passion and share it with their family and friends. This would result in a more diverse next generation of scientists, environmental educators, and environmental stewards." —Miguel Ordeñana, wildlife biologist, from Introduction to We Heart P-22

February 12 marked the 10-year anniversary of the discovery of our famed mountain lion, P-22, in Griffith Park, after pictures of him were caught by camera traps placed by Miguel, who at the time was collecting footage as part of the Griffith Park Connectivity Study. Since Ordeñana shared those images, he and other wildlife advocates, including the National Park Service that put a GPS collar on P-22 that March and gave him his moniker (“P” for puma and “22” for the number cougar they had collared), have followed P-22’s adventures in—and sometimes out of—the park.

Originally from the western Santa Monica Mountains, this nimble puma has faced much adversity to travel to and survive in one of North America’s largest urban parks. P-22’s continued survival proves that the city is a dynamic place where animals and people can coexist. This makes him an apt ambassador of urban wildlife. We loved his story so much that we dedicated our first publication, We Heart P-22, to him!

Through the project we became connected to an incredible community of artists, educators, and wildlife advocates, including Miguel , Beth Pratt-Bergstrom of the National Wildlife Federation, and Friends of Griffith Park. More than 50 people in all contributed to our coloring and activity book, with a cover illustration by Leticia Meza and colored and designed by Miriam Blier, and interior designed by Lucy Gonzalez. Happy 10 His Harrowing Journey
By Beth Pratt-Bergstrom, California director, National Wildlife Federation
It was 2012 when two-year-old P-22—as he is now known to the world—headed east toward
Los Angeles from the Santa Monica Mountains. He walked regally, muscles rippled beneath his
tawny coat, that unmistakable long tail twitched at times. His leaving home, called “dispersal” by
biologists, marked a typical milestone for a cougar his age, as young males must seek out their
own territory. Cougars can fight to the death over territory, and the relatively young P-22 knew
he was no match for an older, more experienced cat.
P-22 just may be the Neil Armstrong of his kind. A quick glance at his route on a map showed he
had to be a bit mad to even attempt his journey. To get to his new territory of Griffith Park, he
had to cross the 405 and the 101, two of the busiest freeways in the United States.

We Heart Griffith Park!

Did you know that the Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round inspired the creation of Disneyland,
or that a Tongva village once flourished where Fern Dell is?

Explore Griffith Park’s
fascinating history with us on Saturday, November 13th at #GriffithPark125!

We’ve partnered with the L.A. Conservancy for a parkwide event to commemorate the park’s 125th anniversary. 🥳 We will be near the carousel with coloring pages by several local artists and our enlarged Griffith Park map by Miriam Blier @mibiler and Adventures of P-22 board game by Lucy Gonzalez @beldengirl.

We will also be fondly remembering our friend and former co-owner of the merry-go-round, Julio, who passed away last year. We will be sharing a behind-the-scenes tour of the site with him from 2017. We miss him so much!

Visit @laconservancy for event updates and a free
downloadable map! #GriffithPark #ThisPlaceMatters #TellTheFullStory

Toasting all the teachers, staff, and families who returned to campuses this week. As parents, we are grateful for the care our kids have received during these challenging times.

Enjoy this cocktail/mocktail recipe named CITY OF ANGELS by Vay Su of @bearandstone. He crafted it for our recent @usc_pam event and it includes calamansi!

Inspiration: "Growing up in Los Angeles, it's hard to ignore the abundance of amazing agave spirits we have access to, so for this cocktail I was able to combine different Asian flavors with my exposure to great tequila. If I were to grow up in any other city in the U.S., I probably would have never come up with this combination of flavors.” —Vay Su

Thankful for the words of editor and author @cassandra.lane71 on our We Heart L.A. Parks book and her reflections on our city in the July/August issue of L.A. Parent:

"One of the interesting aspects of Los Angeles is that it’s an intricate weaving of concrete jungle and natural beauty. It’s a city ridiculed for an overreliance on cars and often, by unobservant outsiders, called an ugly tangle of brick walls and highways, but we Angelenos know that just off some of those highways are emerald gems (sometimes small, sometimes sprawling). Our parks, not our highways, are our city’s arteries...

Editors Teena Apeles and Andrea Richards say they chose the family-friendly coloring-book format to reach – and include – young budding activists and people of all ages, and to cover park equity, activism and history in creative and personal ways."

Ambitious projects take root at historic Griffith Park nursery

"The Commonwealth Nursery -- which once grew as many as 2 million plants a year for city parks -- sat dormant for decades in its corner of Griffith Park. Its 11-acres of garden plots, greenhouses and sheds fell into disrepair.

But now the nursery, found at the northern tip of Commonwealth Avenue, is springing back to life..." By Brenda Rees

After sitting dormant for decades, the Commonwealth Nursery in Griffith Park is being revived to once again grow plants and play a role in education, job training and social justice
