The stands of Shepard Stadium were filled with family and friends of the graduates of Pierce College at the 77th commencement ceremony on June 10.

Associated Student Organization (A*O) President Jasmine Minchez was one of the speakers during the ceremony and shared her pride in being a Brahma.

“Wherever your path leads or wherever it began, we can all proudly say community college played a part in it.” Minchez said. “I am a proud graduate of Los Angeles Pierce College.”

After the speeches, the graduates lined up to be called to receive their diplomas. They each had a chance to show off their decorated caps, which ranged from fun, artistic designs to honoring heritage and family history.

For some, this is the end of the road for their academic careers, but for others, this is a step to another goal.

A car fire was reported shortly after noon on Monday in the Pierce College Admissions Parking Lot.

ENCORE student Tanya Potvin said she was driving toward the Music Building when she noticed the electronics in the car start to go out and decided to pull over.

According to Media Arts Professor Jeff Favre, who was walking on campus, he saw dark gray smoke coming from the parking lot and a fire engine with its lights on.

Emergency personnel from the Los Angeles Fire Department quickly responded to the incident and extinguished the fire.

The silver Honda Accord car’s engine bay was charred and is currently still at the Admissions Parking Lot.

This is a developing story.

The Pierce Men’s volleyball team travels to Moorpark College as they battle their penultimate game on April 9., losing the match with a final score of 3-0.

Pierce showed considerable improvement compared to their previous game. Despite a slow start, the Brahmas are making progress and starting to believe in their ability to compete with top teams in the state, according to head coach Joseph Arechiga.

“I wish a few things would have gone our way here and there, but we pushed them, we challenged them and I’m proud of what we did,” Arechiga said. “It’s the mental consistency when things aren’t going our way.”

Toward the end of the first set, the game transformed into an intense back-and-forth competition, with Pierce finishing strongly. However, Moorpark claimed the win, 25-18.

It was a tight game in the second set against the Raiders. Pierce setter Karl Manolong recognized the close margin of victory as the team gradually built momentum. In the end, Moorpark won the set 25-18.

“We started really low at first and then just gradually went up and up,” Manolong said. “If we rode the energy, the third set would have been ours, fourth set, and maybe fifth set.”

Moorpark won 25-18 in the third set, ending the game. Opposite hitter Sam Henry feels he could have done more and thinks the team could have contributed more, but they had a few lapses here and there, and things didn’t go as planned for the Brahmas.

“Volleyball to me is like a game of tug of war, and the thing about tug of war is the second you lose your grip, you lose,” Henry said. “So we lost our grip, we let it get away from us and we just kept losing and they kept pulling and pulling until the game was over.”

The Brahmas are set to wrap up their season with their final game against Santa Barbara City College on April 11 at 6:00 p.m.
