One of the joys that I get from making Legacy Films for people when they tell me it feels like they are getting to know their own family for the first time.
Too often people assume that being familiar with someone is actually knowing them, when in truth you could be blown away at just how much you don't even know about those whom you've grown up around.
As you sit together with your family over the holidays, treat it as an opportunity to learn something that may surprise you about your own parent or grandparent. It could be very opening and illuminating.
Here are a few questions that can spark some discovery:
1. What was a normal day like when you were a child?
2. What is something you've always loved doing?
3. When did you first see a television?
4. What was the hardest / best thing about raising your children?
5. What did you do for your wedding & honeymoon?
6. What do you feel is your greatest quality & when has it shown up in life?
When you allow someone to share their story, you honor them and provide the opportunity to connect on a deeper level.
As they begin to open up, listen.
Really listen.
Pay attention and ask questions about the details as if you were there with them.
What I have learned through the interviews that I have done, is that even family can feel a little bashful, or timid.
The older generation often believes their old stories can't be that interesting, but the more you show just how genuinely interested you are, the more they will open up with perspectives and moments that can truly surprise you.
