People have asked me over the years how I come up with names for characters. I'm sure every screenwriter's been asked that question and the answer is universal...there really is no set way a charcater's name comes to mind. Many times, it depends on the type of character we're creating. Strong characters usually come with strong names like James T. Kirk, Luke Skywalker, or Jack O'Neil. Quirky characters have quirky names like Hawkeye Pierce or Radar O'Reilly. Of course, the process keeps going and going. In the caseof these characters, you'd have to ask their creators how they came about naming them. In the case of "No Right Turn"/"NRT", our lead character is a fellow by the name of William L. Westhaven. Before I even knew who this Westhaven was as a person, I knew his name. I like strong characters and the name resonated with me. In my case, the attached picture shows exactly how his last name came to be. Yep, that's right, it came right off of a street sign. I had been driving past this street for years...decades actually and I was always taken with the name for some odd reason. I knew when the time came, I would build a character around this name and I did exactly that. There you go. That's how the lead character in NRT got his name. More on the other characters in this series is to come.
