Say you and I are working on a record. We'd spend all this time together and get to know each other really well.

It comes down to what makes you tick. What makes you different from everybody else.

It's already in there. It's a matter of framing it the right way, coaxing it out, shining a certain light on it.

That's what people love about their favorite artists. "Oh, that's so-and-so." Like a flavor of ice cream.

I always do my own projects on the side. Aerosol is the current one.

It's really important that I not try to get my ya-yas off with my clients' projects. I wanna be a clean slate for them — reflect them, show up for them.

I don't wanna have my own "oh, I gotta do this thing in a song someday." And you're my next guinea pig.

I think we know people like that too.

We'll have shared playlists. Sometimes a Pinterest board, so the artist can show me visuals. We'll talk about movies.

It becomes self-evident what's on the artist's mind.

Because so much of making a great record is being authentic to where the artist is right now.

If an artist comes to me wanting an album that's all happy and uplifting, but they're in a deep, dark depression, there's gonna be something not genuine about that.

Say we're making a record and you've got a choice of guitar tones. They're all great. They're just all different.

So how do we know which one is right? Do we go, well, it's Tuesday at 2 PM, I'll take choice C? Is it arbitrary — whatever you're feeling in the moment?

Or maybe you've got a buddy you're close with who makes an amp. Now you want to work together. You're helping each other.

And suddenly the tone you choose has a narrative to it. It reinforces what it is that you represent.

Security is where everything has a predictable outcome. You can count on it.

Creativity is everything security is not — not being afraid to fall on your face, ten dumb ideas so you can get to the eleventh great one.

So a big part of the job is building the room. We've all got each other's back. Anyone wants to make a fool of themselves, we might laugh and point, but we love you, and we're there to lift you up.

Fear never leads to the best decisions.

The first thing I do in any session — even one I've been working on for a while — is sit with a pad and listen down once or twice without stopping.

That first listen or two produces the notes that outline everything I'm going to do for the rest of the session.

It's when your mind and your ears are freshest, and you react purely.

After that you're basically done reacting. The rest of the session is just doing the things on the list.

The connection between an artist and their listeners is that sense of: this person speaks for me.

This person represents what I feel. And therefore they know me. They see me — because they're speaking from my point of view.

I swear that's more important than a certain production style, or performance ability, or craft.

The through line with every successful artist is that they connect with a portion of the populace that gets them. And they get each other.

There's a sense of duty. Maybe that comes from my stoic readings.

If our job is to be here on this earth and help each other with the short time we have, then artists have a way to express things in non-verbal forms — and to give a voice to those who don't have one.

You take the artist's path because you need to. Because that's who you are. Because if not, you'd run into traffic.

Then the duty extends to being a voice for those who will never be able to put their feelings into art.
