, skipping the line and posting a BN Whiteface as requested.

"When BN's Kearney Spur from Kenesaw was torn out in 1976 the BN opted for trackage rights to serve their remaining customer(s) in Kearney, which explains why I was treated to a Burlington Northern local on Union Pacific's main line trucking thru Gibbon, NE in 1993. The local is headed back to home rails at Hastings. The BN units on this job were exempt from CCS requirements. BN service to Kearney ended in 1995."

The Nickel Plate Road was late to dieselize. Still running 2-8-4 Berkshire steam locomotives until mid-1957, they were one of the last major railroads to run steam. The year is 1963, however, and steam is gone. Here, class leader GP30, NKP 900, sits in Conneaut, Ohio coupled to ALCO RS-3 NKP 544 on Wednesday May 29, 1963. NKP 900 still lives today and is on display at the Mad River and NKP Museum in Bellevue, Ohio.

"The CNW GP30 fleet had been in and out of storage for a number years. It appeared they were finally laid up for good in about 1985-86.

Then a friend called and mentioned that three of them had been reactivated and were working out of Chadron, NE. These three were made operational for the planned FRV line sale around Green Bay. The sale was delayed and CNW had sent the 30's out to Chadron to work some of the kinks out after there last stint in storage. I got some time off work knowing this could be over any day and headed to Rapid City to try to catch them.

The first train I saw was a really late running westbound that had arrived at Belle Fourche with 815 on the point. Trouble was it had already cut off the train and was about to leave for the end of track west of town. For some reason the power was wyed and the 815 which lead west was again leading east although coming out of the sun on the BFPRA. Late evening I caught him near sunset with 815, 814, 831, 4117, 4502 and 4562 leading 29 cars.

Quite a ride to get out there and I spent a few more days but this was the one and only GP30 in the lead shot I got on the trip. September 12th, 1988"

Hard to imagine not many photos are out there of these, but here is some Great Northern GP30 action. We apologize for the lower quality of this image, but it is too cool not to share.

This train is on the west bound main headed to St Cloud and the west coast passing the NP Northtown short grain yard. You can still take this photo today minus the GN engines. Note the Soo Line yard Shoreham grain elevator in the background. This picture was taken on May 3rd, 1972, just two years after the BN mega-merger.

Our hand was twisted! Diverting from GP30's for one post to wish a very happy 35th birthday today!

What better way to say Happy Birthday than with Missouri Pacific No. 35!

Missouri Pacific EMD E8(A) No. 35 leads train 12 (The Colorado Eagle) at Colorado Springs, Colorado in July 1964. The 35 is a former Texas & Pacific unit. The train was to be discontinued in early April 1965, but actually made its last run several days earlier due to a BLF&E strike. Diner, sleeper and dome service on the Colorado Eagle ended in early 1964.

Union Pacific GP30B's beat out the rest on our poll!

Here's a perfect example of an A-B set of GP30's pulling Union Pacific's Little Mountain Local into Ogden on July 24th, 1980.

Should we finish out the week with GP30's and start with E8/9's on Sunday? Or would you all rather we move on to E8/9's starting tomorrow?

Pennsylvania Railroad GP30s 2222 and 2214. The GP30s were the last new locomotives purchased by the PRR to be equipped with the PRR's "trainphone."

Unknown date, location, or photographer. Any information that we can use to update this would be appreciated! Too cool not to share though!

Trainphone was the Pennsylvania Railroad's system for voice communication between crews on moving trains, dispatchers, and tower operators. It was also used by the Kansas City Southern, and to a lesser extent on the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range. It did not use radio, but rather electromagnetic induction. Railroads did not own any radio frequencies at the time, and the PRR's busy network found the previous methods (passing a physical paper message, or requiring a train to stop to pick up orders) insufficient. The trainphone system was first tested in 1936 and perfected by 1943.
