The ARRAY team says goodbye to Derrick Johnson (), our former colleague who sadly passed away this week. Derrick was one of our collective’s first consultants. He wore many hats for us: office decorator, event designer, organizational specialist. But most of all, he was a friend to the company. His cheerful aesthetic influence can be seen across the ARRAY Creative Campus to this day. We will remember him with the joy he so often gave us. Our deepest sympathies to his loved ones. 🤍

ARRAYs founder and U.S. Open tournament director Stacey Allaster accepted the Billie Jean King Champions of Equality Award on Thursday, in honor of their groundbreaking work in the film and sports industries.

The award is given to trailblazers in gender equality, and was started in 2023 in honor of the 50th anniversary of King securing equal pay for women at the U.S. Open.

The prior two recipients of the award are tennis legend Venus Williams and television producer Shonda Rhimes, who joined Duvernay in a panel discussion about their careers and equality at the ceremony.

Read Ava's latest Substack post!

Different years, different people, but the same day. August 28. A date that refuses to lie still. It was this mystery that stirred in my imagination through a call from Dr. Lonnie G. Bunch III. He was the Founding Director of the soon to be launched National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) in Washington, DC. A long anticipated, highly acclaimed venue for the celebration and excavation of the African-American experience. Dr. Bunch told me I’d been selected as the filmmaker to make the museum’s introductory film for all visitors. And that it would play daily in the museum for the next decade. Would I accept this unsolicited and auspicious invitation? Um, whoa.

The Day That Won’t Let Us Forget

An unforgettable night at ARRAY! Our signature triple movie experience returned with a Hip-Hop twist as KRUSH GROOVE, BELLY and STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON lit up three screens on our Creative Campus in LA. Plus, a powerful "DP Cypher" conversation with Ernest Dickerson, a surprise film intro by director Michael Schultz, fresh fits, swag bags and an impromptu dance battle hosted by Ava DuVernay. We heart Hip-Hop.

! We're re-watching QUEEN SUGAR this weekend, and this scene directed by icon Neema Barnette is one of our favorites. Did Hollywood handle this situation properly? Let us know in the comments!

This Saturday, the Directors Guild of America honors trailblazing filmmaker Neema Barnette . From breaking barriers as the first African-American woman to direct a primetime sitcom to earning Peabody, Emmy and NAACP Image Awards during her 30+ year career, Neema Barnette’s artistry spans groundbreaking television, feature films and the stage. She’s brought her visionary storytelling to shows like LUKE CAGE, A DIFFERENT WORLD, THE COSBY SHOW, JANE THE VIRGIN, BEING MARY JANE and ARRAY's NAOMI.

Born from the Selma marches, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was signed into law 60 years ago today.

The VRA brought federal oversight to elections and promised protections under the 14th and 15th Amendments.

Scroll through our ARRAY carousel for a timeline of the Voting Rights Act—how it came to be, what it changed, and how it’s been weakened over time.

Then, use our free SELMA Learning Companion to build your own protest playbook and learn how gerrymandering is used to silence voters. Explore it at SELMA101.org.
