The maid had fallen asleep on the floor with the baby when the billionaire walked in—and something unexpected occured...
“Damn it! What do you think you’re doing? Filthy. Disgusting. That’s not yours to hold.” Nathaniel Blake’s voice sliced through the room. He stormed forward and tore the infant from Maya Williams’s arms, leaving her breathless.
“No, please, she just stopped crying,” Maya said.
“I don’t care,” he snapped. “You’re the servant. Not the mother. You’re nothing.”
The baby shrieked instantly, clawing at the air, her cries sharp and frantic.
“Shh, Lily, it’s okay,” Maya whispered. Nathaniel tried to calm her, but the child only thrashed harder, face red with panic.
“She only sleeps with me,” Maya said softly. Still, he stood frozen, his jaw locked.
“Give her back,” she demanded. After a pause, defeat flashed in his eyes. He handed Lily over.
The baby nestled against Maya, her sobs fading within moments. Rocking her gently, Maya said, “I’ve got you, baby.” Nathaniel stayed silent, watching.
That night, the house felt colder. Maya never slept. At breakfast, Nathaniel’s tie was crooked, his coffee untouched.
The next evenings proved the same—Lily screamed for Maya, and only Maya soothed her. On the third night, Nathaniel lingered outside, listening to a lullaby. He knocked softly.
“Maya. I need to speak to you.”
She stepped out. He lowered his gaze. “I owe you an apology. The things I said—they were cruel. Wrong.”
Maya’s voice was steady. “Lily doesn’t care about wealth or titles. She only needs warmth.”
“I know,” he admitted. “She won’t sleep unless she feels safe… and she’s not the only one.”
“I’m not giving up,” Maya said. “Not for you. For her.”
“I hope you’ll stay—for her,” Nathaniel replied.
“For her,” she echoed. And though she didn’t trust him, Lily did. For now, that was enough.
The next morning, Maya moved quietly through the house. No one spoke. She didn’t expect kindness. She was there for the baby.
