In partnership with our friends Art Recovery LA, we offered our fourth conservation clinic on Saturday, September 13th at Altadena Library. Items like books, family photographs, pottery, sculptures and more were cleaned by an incredible team of conservators.

Over 60 conservation volunteers provided support to over 80 community members with more 100 artworks and cherished belongings damaged by the January Fires.

We would like to extend a special thank you to Supervisor Katherine Barger for supporting this event, along with FireAid, Conservation Association of Los Angeles (CALA), and Altadena Library District.

This Arts Education Week, we are highlighting our different initiatives under the Arts Education Collective.

Creative Wellbeing is an approach that uses arts-based strategies that build upon existing community strengths and helps adults like teachers, mentors, and youth workers to support young people in restoration and healing. As young people engage in healing-informed arts education, they explore identity and self-expression, discover ways to connect, and access a sense of mattering, ultimately leading to improved wellbeing.

In 2024-25, teaching artists provided Creative Wellbeing for youth and adults through in-person and virtual direct services, professional development sessions, and arts-based workshops—including at schools and for families affected by the January wildfires. Youth and adults receiving direct services and participating at some special events were surveyed about their experiences. These end-of-year reports summarize the data from those surveys and elaborate on learnings about how Creative Wellbeing nurtures mental health protective factors including social-emotional competencies, stigma reduction and social support.

Swipe through to see highlights from our 2024–2025 reports.

Yesterday, a motion introduced by Pro Tem and First District Supervisor proclaimed Hispanic Heritage Month here in . Hispanic Heritage Month is nationally recognized each year from September 15 – October 15.

“This is a time to honor the heritage, culture, and contributions of Latino communities, who represent nearly half of the County’s population and play a central role in shaping our region’s identity and future. From public service and education to arts, business, and grassroots advocacy, Latino communities continue to lead, build, and inspire across every sector of society.” -

This year, honors Hispanic Heritage Month by highlighting the work of artist Ivy B. Velazquez, whose artwork “The Alvarez Adventure” joined the Los Angeles County Civic Art Collection last year.

“The Alvarez Adventure” illustrates the magic of reading, the limitless power of imagination, and the joy of familial connection. The four paintings depict a family reading together and becoming immersed in a shared world of wonder and creativity. Velazquez demonstrates the delight of embarking on fantastical journeys while nurturing a collective imagination through the captivating world of books.

We invite you to visit this artwork, on display at the Florence Public Library on the second floor of the Florence Firestone Community Service Center 📍7807 Compton Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90001

About the Artist:
Ivy Velazquez (she/they), born in 2000 and raised in Los Angeles, is a first-generation Mexican American artist who finds inspiration in the city's diverse landscape as well as in her environment and heritage. Her work, characterized by cartoon-style figures adorned with elements of spray paint and acrylic, weaves together personal experiences, childhood/teenhood nostalgia, and the vibrant influence of 1990s cartoons, together with a mix of whimsical folktales.
