Mark from Under the Radar here. In 2019 my co-publisher/wife Wendy, our then six-year-old daughter Rose, and I traveled to Asheville to photograph Angel Olsen for a cover story on “All Mirrors.” We shot at her house, where she was incredibly welcoming, and around Asheville—it was our first visit and we fell in love with the city. She also took us to an abandoned house she’d been wanting to photograph in, which is where these photos were taken.

Moments like this feel best captured in the permanence of print rather than the fleeting online scroll.

“I love performing and becoming a character, but there is some aspect of it that is always 100% me; which part of that, I can’t tell you,” Olsen told us in our Issue 66 cover story.

We’d been covering Angel Olsen since the earliest days of her career, and the expansive “All Mirrors”—released on Jagjaguwar and still probably my favorite album of hers—felt like the right moment to finally put her on the cover. Frank Valish, who has written for us consistently since Issue 3, first covered Olsen for Under the Radar in 2011 with a review of her debut EP, making him the natural choice to write the story.

“I went off it towards the end of the 20th century. I wasn’t enjoying things at all, and got into a weird, convoluted thought process, because it had been something that I wanted to do from being a kid, and then I achieved my ambition, and then it kind of bit me.” – Jarvis Cocker of Pulp in our ’90s Issue Part 2.

For one of the issue’s two cover stories, Lily Moayeri spoke to all four core members of Pulp—Jarvis Cocker, Candida Doyle, Nick Banks, and Mark Webber—about being one of the reluctant figureheads of the Britpop movement, their classic ’90s albums and songs, the 2023 passing of Pulp bassist Steve Mackey, and their remarkable 2025 comeback album, “More,” their first new album in 24 years (released on Rough Trade Records).

Flight of the Conchords as Wham!

In 2008, our co-publisher Wendy Lynch Redfern photographed the New Zealand musical comedy duo in Los Angeles for the cover of Issue 21, around the launch of their HBO show and their first album for Sub Pop.

For the shoot, we dressed Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement up as iconic musical duos and recreated famous album covers, photos, and music video moments. This shot referenced the cover of Wham!’s 1984 sophomore album “Make It Big,” featuring “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,” “Everything She Wants,” “Freedom,” and “Careless Whisper.” To the right is the original cover image.

Other setups recreated John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Hall & Oates, Mick Jagger and David Bowie, Kid ’n Play, and Captain & Tennille.

Flight of the Conchords recently performed their first shows in eight years as part of the Netflix Is a Joke Festival in Los Angeles and, based on the videos online, they looked just as hilarious as ever.

It’s harder and harder to pull off elaborate concept photo shoots like this one—which required costumes, props, studio space, and a lot of planning—due to rising printing costs and declining advertising revenue.

Mark from Under the Radar here. Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream is a huge fan of The Cramps. So when we asked him in 2005 to suggest another artist for a joint interview in Issue 8, he immediately chose the psychobilly/punk legends led by husband-and-wife duo Lux Interior and Poison Ivy. I moderated a phone interview between Gillespie and The Cramps, then my wife/co-publisher Wendy and I visited Interior and Ivy’s wonderfully kitschy, retro Los Angeles home for a photo shoot. It was everything you’d hope a house owned by The Cramps would be.

One of my favorite shots from the session was taken at their kitchen table, with Lux holding a copy of “Cooking to Kill” and a can of Cramps pork brains sitting nearby. The band weren’t doing many photo shoots at that point and Lux sadly passed away just four years later, so this may have been one of the last major photo sessions of the two of them together.

The Primal Scream vs. The Cramps feature ran in a special Under the Influence section that also featured Devendra Banhart vs. Donovan, Clinic vs. Can, The Thrills vs. Brian Wilson, and The Dears’ Murray Lightburn on Morrissey. Over the years we’ve also done ambitious joint interviews with the likes of Paul Rudd, Cillian Murphy, Peter Gabriel, Peter Murphy of Bauhaus, Hall & Oates, Stephen Malkmus, Ethan Hawke, Jason Schwartzman, and others. These are the kinds of deep-dive features that still feel especially meaningful in print.

This December we celebrate the 25th anniversary of our first issue. Help keep the magazine in print, where it belongs. Rising printing costs and declining advertising revenue make that harder every year, but with the support of readers like you, we can keep going.

For our new Digital Cover Story, Julia Cu***ng of Sunflower Bean discusses her debut solo album, "Julia," out now on Partisan Records.

In conversation with Andy Von Pip, Cu***ng opens up about stepping outside of the band context, confronting mental health struggles while making the record, relocating from New York to Los Angeles, and creating an album rooted in vulnerability, self-exploration, and emotional honesty.

“The songs on 'Julia' seemed to just arrive, and once they did, I had to reshape my whole artistic life to do what was right for them.”

“I’m never going to be musically hard enough to be accepted by some people, and I’m never going to be pop enough to be a pop star, so I thought, ‘F**k it, I should just be myself.’”
