Unlimited Love by Red Hot Chili Peppers was mixed in Studio 5 here at EastWest Studios by the incredible Ryan Hewitt
Congratulations to all of our Grammy winners! All recorded at EastWest Studios.
Originally constructed as Cashis King grocery market in 1933, our recording studios have a history that spans over nearly 90 years. Cashis King was at its time the largest market on the West Coast (you can still see some of the meat locker doors from this time).
The market survived the Depression years until 1942 when it was converted into Madame Zucca’s Hollywood Casino. Madame Zucca’s entertained World War II soldiers with its wild burlesque shows and not-so-legal gambling. Over the next couple of years, the name was changed to the French Casino, Sunset Rancho, and Bowerey Music Hall Follies.
By 1946, the casino had closed and the building was converted into the Hollywood Radio Center. Later it was called West Coast Productions – the main stage was where Studio One stands today and produced hit radio shows like the Tennessee Ernie Ford Show. In 1954 the name was changed to Radio Center Theatre.
In 1957, Don Blake acquired the building and it was renamed Western Recorders. Soon, Blake would go on to sell Western Recorders to an engineer named Bill Putnam – Frank Sinatra’s personal engineer – who kept the name, but started the process of transforming the space into the recording studio we know today.

Studio Five is known as one of the best sounding rooms ever constructed. Originally a mix room where some of the biggest hits by Nirvana, R.E.M. and Muse were mixed, the studio underwent extensive renovation in 2013 and has since catered to the créme de la crème of the industry.
It features a 64 Channel Solid State Logic SL 4064 G+ with Ultimation, Custom Augsperger 2 X 15 Mains with TAD components and 18" JBL subwoofers all driven by Bryston amps.
With the largest control room in the building, natural lighting, and a vast isolation booth, Studio Five also offers clients the biggest perk of all: exclusive access to our infamous VIP Lounge.
Our goal - combine the epic sound recordings of the past with a bold, playful vision of the future. A place where artists can meet, mingle, and be inspired, while at the same time shaping the way music is heard for generations to come.
“It is a dream come true to work out of what I consider to be the most historically significant recording studio in the world. The vibe, staff, and acoustics are all legendary.” - Grammy Award-winning mixer Jeff Ellis (Doja Cat, Frank Ocean, The Neighbourhood, Kali Uchis) on Studio 4.
Artist Lounges 1 + 2 + 3. Booking time at our studio guarantees access to your own private artist lounge, each designed by Philippe Starck.
Studio Three comes equipped with a classic Trident “A” Range Console (40 Channel with Neve Flying Faders Automation), the “original” and one of six surviving in the world.
When Brian Wilson quit touring with The Beach Boys, he set out to create the greatest rock album ever made, experimenting for months on end with session players from The Wrecking Crew in Studio Three.
The resulting Wall of Sound is now known as the best album of all time (or tied with The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper, depending on your preferences).
For a dramatized play-by-play of the concept album’s conception and release, we recommend the film “Love and Mercy,” which was shot at EastWest in 1966, featuring true to life recreations of the recording console and wardrobe from the time period.
Some of the most iconic hits of the 1960s were born in Studio Three. The Mamas and the Papas recorded “California Dreaming” and “Monday, Monday” here, along with Scott McKenzie’s classic “San Francisco”. But one album recorded here stands above all the rest – The Beach Boy’s 1966 masterpiece Pet Sounds.
Studio Two has a Neve RCA Custom 8028 Console, one of only 2 built with Class A discrete electronics. David Bowie mixed Iggy Pop’s Raw Power on this desk.
Elvis in Studio 1 - 1968
Simply put, Studio Two is one of the best rock recording rooms in the world. Its high ceilings and mid-ambience provide a tight punchy sound constantly sought after by top producers like Rick Rubin. Originally the site where the themes from many classic television shows were recorded (The Monkees, The Partridge Family, The Beverly Hillbillies, Hawaii Five-0), the studio later evolved to serve the needs of The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, Weezer, Metallica and countless other rock acts.
Studio One features an 80 channel Neve 8078 Console, the largest in the world. So many celebrated songs and soundtracks have been recorded on this desk - it’s an industry legend!

As soon as the doors opened, our studios were producing some of the biggest hits of the pop music era. Frank Sinatra, whose new label Reprise was also housed in the building, recorded some of his greatest work in Studio One, including “My Way”, “The Summer Wind”, “That’s Life”, and his duet with his daughter Nancy Sinatra “Somethin’ Stupid”.
Studio One has produced some of the most celebrated albums in music history. Spanning over 61,000 cubic feet with a vibrant sound that’s unparalleled, it’s perfect for any session – from single voice to 70-piece symphonic orchestra.

The idea was simple – take the most historic recording studios in the United States and transform it to meet the needs of contemporary artists and producers. The key ingredient, however, was in preserving the integrity of the live recording rooms, as built by legendary engineer Bill Putnam in 1961.
