Congrats selected as one of the Dwell 24 - ‘s annual roster of the best new talent.

“With her medium of welded metal, Cologne, Germany–based designer Hannah Kuhlmann iterates on the everyday furnishings in our domestic spaces, creating objects that challenge the sometimes antiseptic precision of industrial production. ‘I sketch the objects I envision and bring them to life with my own hands and give them a personal signature,’ she says. ‘The objects I create are more like companions—entities you live with.’ Although perfecting the use of tubular stainless steel in distinctive forms has been her main preoccupation, Kuhlmann has begun to incorporate softer elements but hasn’t left metal behind. ‘When designing a daybed, I no longer think only in terms of upholstery,’ she says. ‘I think of the upholstery as a garment and have begun to decorate my designs with jewel-like adornments.’”

“In a city that has become the incubator of our future-forward world so fraught with disruption, Kwong has composed a domestic realm that abounds in timeless, sensuous serenity — it is a true wellspring of grace.”

Designer Michael Hilal () presents a unique installation at COLLECTIBLE NY () and curates the new Vignette section alongside founders Liv Vaisberg and Clélie Debehault.

“I created my own vignette that was emblematic of collectible design to me at this current time with a little new and old. With a paired back appearance I really wanted the space to be focused on the handful of select beautiful items in the space. I brought in a couple of iconic vintage pieces - The Philippe Starck Aluminum Costes chair made in 1992 and the Antonio Citterio Kalos Chair made in 1997 covered in sumptuous Schumacher Moire Silk fabric. I paired this pieces with contemporary artists like Samantha Mccurdy (where we are exploring light sculpture, Kiki Gotti’s beautiful glass vessels, Ian Spencer’s English Oak table with a light burn finish, Vaughn Davis Jr’s sculptural canvas piece, and Armadillo’s plush sculptural rug. All of this was put together against a moody backdrop using Farrow and Ball’s London Clay color.”

Come visit today through Sunday!

“It has a heroic, Roman quality’: how Arkansas’s timber university building could revolutionise architecture”

First conceived as a ‘spider’s web of sticks’, this vast wooden wonder may end up being a template for the environmentally sound buildings of the future.

“We imagined the building as a storybook of wood,” says Yvonne Farrell, co-founder of Dublin architects Grafton, the Pritzker prize-winning firm behind the project, with local firm Modus. “They wanted something hewn, carved, jointed, woven, assembled, layered, laminated – showing all the possibilities of building with timber.”

Back in Dublin, Grafton is fired up about forests. Its architects are now working on a timber apartment building in Nantes, France; another partly wooden educational building in Firminy; and a writer’s centre in South Korea, with a local master joiner. “We’re not saying everything has to be all timber,” says co-founder Shelley McNamara. “Hybrid structures are often the answer. But here, from our island in the Atlantic, we’ve tried to make something that is an expression of the university’s culture. We hope the building will be a good teacher.”

‘The dozen pieces range from an anthropomorphic candle holder that was part of Valentijn’s graduation project to a low-slung, golden credenza, both rendered large-scale and in specially treated metal, so that they’re monumental, sculptural. “I like to see how far I can strip function away,” says Valentijn, who makes all his creations by hand, flowing from sketch to cut to weld, omitting preparatory models, “before an object becomes something else entirely.”’

Now on
Dinner Is Served, at a 200-Foot-Long Table in the Oregon Woods

The Oregon winemaker Maggie Harrison, 52, launched her label, Antica Terra, in 2005, and is now considered one of the Willamette Valley’s leading purveyors of chardonnay and pinot noir. But it wasn’t until last year, after operating out of a nondescript warehouse in Dundee for the better part of two decades, that her business got a home worthy of its stature: a 148-acre patch of land on the outskirts of Amity, a small town about an hour south of Portland. Since taking over the property, Harrison has been at work creating her dream winery with a team of collaborators, chief among them Jai Kumaran, 42, a partner at the architecture and design firm West of West, which has offices in Portland and Los Angeles. Their first project, a candlelit tasting room and kitchen facility fronted by a dramatic oculus, debuted last year. Now comes what they call the Table in the Trees: an outdoor dining and hosting space centered on a sinuous, 200-foot-long, concrete and found-stone table set deep in a hilltop forest.

With deep gratitude to hosts & guests

A visit to Can Lis in Mallorca.

Realized by Jørn Utzon as a respite from a challenging time in Sydney, Australia, Can Lis is deliriously simple & complicated at the same time. He used local materials, designed kitchenware to be used at the house & builtin all the furniture.

So many people knocked at the door to see the house he later moved inland to a new house, Can Feliz.

Thank you to the Utzon foundation for the tour.
