What if some of the most influential occult books of the early twentieth century were not written by a circle of mysterious adepts at all—but by one extraordinarily prolific man writing through a succession of masks?

William Walker Atkinson wrote under his own name—but also behind identities associated with Yogi Ramacharaka, Theron Q. Dumont, Swami Panchadasi, Swami Bhakta Vish*ta, Magus Incognito, the anonymous Arcane books, and, very likely, the “Three Initiates” behind The Kybalion.

Taken separately, these books appear to come from different worlds.

Yoga. Personal magnetism. Telepathy. Clairvoyance. Rosicrucianism. Mental science. Astral cosmology. Concentration. New Thought. Hermetic philosophy.

Taken together, they begin to look like a single hidden architecture.

Atkinson was not merely prolific. He created a constellation of authorial identities, each speaking in a different voice, each entering a different corner of the metaphysical world, and each returning to the same persistent ideas: will, vibration, thought force, suggestion, polarity, mental influence, and the disciplined transformation of consciousness.

His bibliography reads almost like an occult map of the early twentieth century.

Behind it lie mesmerism, hypnotism, Spiritualism, mental healing, and psychical research. Around it gather New Thought, American occultism, popularized yoga, personal magnetism, correspondence instruction, and practical psychology. Ahead of it lie modern self-help, positive thinking, manifestation culture, and much of the metaphysical language still circulating today.

And somewhere inside that labyrinth sits The Kybalion.

Our expanded feature follows the entire network—the signed books, pseudonymous works, disputed attributions, the Ramacharaka library, Dumont’s magnetism texts, the Arcane series, the Rosicrucian material, The Kybalion, and the twelve-volume Personal Power system.

Telepathy. Healing at a distance. Hypnotism. Breath vibration. Psychical research. The mental origin of disease.

In 1898, Charles Brodie Patterson gathered all of these subjects under one title: New Thought Essays.

Patterson was not simply another metaphysical author. He was an editor, publisher, lecturer, organizer, and one of the figures helping define New Thought while the movement itself was still taking shape.

His books moved freely between mental healing, spiritual law, psychology, psychic phenomena, character, consciousness, and human potential—subjects that would later be divided among very different disciplines and traditions.

To encounter Patterson today is to encounter New Thought before its boundaries had been settled: experimental, metaphysical, occasionally strange, and engaged with questions about mind and consciousness that remain with us more than a century later.

Our latest feature returns to Patterson’s books, his publishing work, and the largely forgotten intellectual world he helped build.

Hilton Hotema built one of the strangest and most ambitious systems of twentieth-century metaphysical thought.

Writing across alternative medicine, longevity, breath culture, occult physiology, biblical symbolism, diet reform, regeneration, and esoteric Christianity, Hotema argued that the human body possessed capacities modern civilization had largely forgotten how to use.

Born George R. Clements, he developed a worldview in which the body was not simply a biological machine, but an expression of deeper forces—breath, vitality, consciousness, solar energy, and what earlier metaphysical writers often described as the Life Principle.

His books moved freely between physiology and scripture, fasting and mysticism, aging and regeneration, occult anatomy and spiritual evolution. Read individually, they can appear eccentric. Read together, they reveal a much larger project: an attempt to recover what Hotema believed was an ancient science of human potential.

Many of his medical and physiological conclusions fall well outside modern scientific understanding, and the distinction matters. But historically, his work belongs to a much older intellectual current connecting nineteenth-century vitalism, naturopathy, New Thought, occult Christianity, breath culture, natural hygiene, and the perennial search for the hidden principle animating living matter.

Our newest article for The Mind Magnet examines Hotema’s identity, his major ideas, the traditions that shaped him, and the remarkable body of work he left behind.

The title asks the question at the center of his entire system:

WHAT IF DEATH IS A HABIT?

Buckminster Fuller understood that efficiency could be more than an engineering principle: it could become a way of thinking about humanity’s relationship with the entire planet.

Best remembered for the geodesic dome, Fuller was an inventor, designer, teacher, and systems thinker whose ambitions extended far beyond architecture. He spent much of the twentieth century asking how structures, transportation, housing, energy, and planetary resources might be understood as parts of a single interconnected system.

Our newest article for The Mind Magnet explores Fuller’s ideas on geometry, synergy, tensegrity, resource efficiency, and “Spaceship Earth,” while tracing the development of his work through the Dymaxion House, geodesic structures, and the system of geometry he eventually called Synergetics.

It also looks beyond the familiar heroic-inventor story, examining the earlier geodesic work of Walther Bauersfeld and the important contributions of Fuller’s collaborators, including Kenneth Snelson and Jeffrey Lindsay.

Fuller’s later influence extended well beyond engineering. His language of geometry, interconnected systems, energy, and planetary consciousness found an enthusiastic audience within the counterculture, environmental movement, alternative design, New Age thought, and sacred geometry.

The distinction is important. Fuller was not secretly teaching an occult cosmology. But the cultural afterlife of his ideas reveals something fascinating about the twentieth century: systems, networks, geometry, and energy increasingly became a new language through which people imagined the hidden order connecting things.

The article includes seven genuine archival images, including photographs of the Dymaxion House, historical engineering drawings, and an experimental Fuller Research Foundation geodesic dome.

Florence Scovel Shinn understood something that modern self-help often reduces to a slogan: the words we repeat, the expectations we carry, and the images we hold in mind can become organizing forces in our lives.

Before becoming one of the most enduring voices of New Thought, Shinn worked as an artist and illustrator in New York. Her later metaphysical writing retained that visual quality—doors, roads, games, signs, wands, and sudden openings became ways of describing the movement of consciousness itself.

Our newest article for The Mind Magnet explores Shinn’s ideas on the spoken word, intuition, prosperity, faith, self-expression, and the practical discipline of expectation, while tracing the development of her work through:

The Game of Life and How to Play It (1925)
Your Word Is Your Wand (1928)
The Magic Path of Intuition (written 1936)
The Secret Door to Success (1940)
The Power of the Spoken Word (1945)

The article also includes a period portrait of Shinn, original artwork from her career as an illustrator, and our Holographic Pagan Press editions of all five works.

C.K. Lee — Curator, Odd Enough Books | Publisher, Holographic Pagan Press

Odd Enough Books began in 2015 as an extension of a much older pursuit: the gathering, study, and preservation of unusual books.

For nearly two decades, I have assembled a private reference library of approximately 18,000 volumes, with particular attention to metaphysics, occult philosophy, psychology, mysticism, astrology, New Thought, alternative healing traditions, and the many forgotten currents that exist between them.

Odd Enough Books is the library; Holographic Pagan Press is the imprint. Through both, my work is centered upon recovering scarce and neglected texts, preserving them in physical and digital form, and returning worthwhile ideas to circulation.

The pursuit continues.

Ancient Magic, Magnetism and Psychic Forces: The Key to Power is one of L. H. Anderson’s foundational works on occult power, personal magnetism, hypnotism, mesmerism, psychic development, and the cultivation of directed mental force.

Originally published in 1895, this substantial 223-page volume belongs to the body of late-nineteenth-century literature in which mesmerism, mental science, self-mastery, psychic research, and esoteric philosophy converged. Anderson presents magnetism and psychic force as practical capacities to be studied, cultivated, and consciously directed.

The work stands among Anderson’s most elusive titles and offers an unusually broad view of the ideas that informed his later writings on magnetism, hypnotism, personal influence, and occult development.

The Holographic Pagan Press edition has been newly prepared as a substantial handmade large-format volume. The historic brown cover design has been reproduced in its original-color character, paired with a black cloth tape-bound spine, while the interior preserves the period text in black and white.

Each HPP physical copy is printed, assembled, and finished by hand.

The Holographic Pagan Press edition is a newly prepared edition and not an original antique copy. The original 1895 book is offered separately as the collector-copy variant on this listing.

What if the mind is capable of influencing far more than we commonly imagine? 🌀

Long before modern conversations about hypnosis, suggestion, and subconscious influence entered popular culture, L. H. Anderson was exploring these subjects through practical instruction and direct experimentation.

Published in the late nineteenth century, *How to Hypnotize* emerged during a period when mesmerism, psychology, mental influence, and the hidden capacities of consciousness occupied a unique space between science and mystery.

Whether viewed as a historical curiosity or an early exploration of the subconscious mind, Anderson's work offers a fascinating glimpse into how previous generations understood the relationship between thought, will, and human behavior.

This exploration examines the life, writings, and legacy of L. H. Anderson, along with the broader cultural fascination surrounding hypnotism, suggestion, and mental influence at the turn of the twentieth century.

Do you believe hypnosis reveals hidden abilities of the mind—or simply demonstrates capacities we have yet to fully understand?

What if light and color are more than visual experiences — and instead participate in the energetic and psychological architecture of consciousness itself? 🌈

Edwin D. Babbitt explored a fascinating synthesis of chromotherapy, sacred geometry, vibrational healing, and harmonic philosophy through the belief that color and light exert profound effects upon the body, mind, and human nervous system. His work proposed that nature operates through luminous energetic principles woven throughout consciousness and the structure of reality itself.

This exploration examines Babbitt’s theories surrounding color therapy, vibration, symbolic cosmology, radiant geometry, and the possibility that harmony and consciousness are deeply connected through the energetic language of light.

Do you think color and light influence human consciousness more deeply than modern science fully understands?

What if the human body is more than biological — and instead operates as a symbolic, vibrational, and energetic reflection of larger cosmic patterns? 🝖

George W. Carey explored a fascinating synthesis of mineral salts, occult anatomy, astrology, vibrational physiology, and consciousness through the belief that hidden correspondences exist between the human organism and the structure of the universe itself. His writings proposed that chemistry, energy, symbolism, and awareness are deeply interconnected within the architecture of human life.

This exploration examines Carey’s theories surrounding esoteric physiology, the zodiac and the body, alchemical consciousness, and the possibility that human beings mirror deeper universal laws through the energetic structure of life itself.

Do you think the body may contain symbolic or energetic dimensions modern science has yet to fully understand?
