Accord Progression

Accord Progression Accord Progression Operated by Tommy Tung, the site is devoted to arts journalism and arts-related writing. The more this is edified, the more we are actualized.

The title reimagines "a chord progression," a core component in music, to indicate velocity as well as harmony. All the arts — visual, aural, verbal, tactile — are multidisciplinary. This type of accord lives here.

"Zhou essentially argues that the same selfish characteristics that can harm a company can actually secure long-term artistic reputations. Basically, the art world may be the place where self-obsession and delusions of grandeur are put to some sort of social use. Better to quarantine them in the studio than have to deal with them in the boardroom."

Professor Yi Zhou studied hundreds of artist signatures, and determined that the bigger the ego, the better an artist does in the art world.

"Research shows that arts education bolsters student achievement and contributes to stronger participation in school activities. Low-income students who participated in arts rich programs had better grades and higher rates of college enrollment and graduation than those who had little or no involvement, according to a 2012 study by the National Endowment for the Arts."

Normandie Avenue Elementary Principal Gustavo Ortiz worries that he can't provide arts classes for most of the 900 students at his South Los Angeles school.

"When producing ideas, you replenish neurotransmitters linked to genes that are being turned on and off in response to challenges. Going through the motions of generating new ideas increases the number of contacts between neurons, and thereby energizes the brain. Every hour spent activating your mind by generating ideas increases creativity. By painting a picture every day, you would become an artist -- perhaps not Van Gogh, but more of an artist than someone who has never tried."

Michael Michalko explains that everyone is an artist and that it takes belief and persistence to nurture this quality. He offers seven principles about creative thinking that he wishes he'd known as a student.
