My five-year-old was "always whining" around my new husband—when I asked him why, he whispered, "I heard dad on the phone... He said I'm a problem."
I thought joy had returned to my life. My first husband vanished overseas, leaving me and my newborn behind. I never planned to open my heart again. But Sam appeared—gentle, patient, fulfilling every hope I had.
It happened on a chaotic day at my favorite coffee shop. Jeremy was at daycare, my workday behind me.
I reached into my purse for my card and realized it wasn't working.
"Oh, come on," I said, trying one more time.
No luck.
The cashier offered a brief, tired glance while embarrassment settled over me. Just as I prepared to leave the counter without my drink, a calm voice intervened.
"Let me get that for you."
I turned. A tall man stood there with warm brown eyes, card in hand, which he used to pay for me.
"Oh no, you don't have to—"
"Really, it's fine," he assured me, smiling. "It's just coffee."
I paused and then said, "Alright. But share your number so I can pay you back."
He laughed. "Deal."
That was the spark. A generous gesture. Numbers exchanged. Messages followed.
We dated a year before marrying. I told Sam that Jeremy and I were a team, and he chose to love us both.
Everything seemed wonderful at first. Jeremy took to Sam, and finally, we felt complete. Then my mother mentioned something. "Don't you see he's always whining around Sam?" I brushed it aside but later noticed. Jeremy was playful and bright with me, but quiet and somber when Sam was present.
After I asked Sam, he firmly said he adored Jeremy. He appeared earnest, but concerns lingered.
While having ice cream days later, I quietly asked Jeremy why he was sad near Sam. His mood shifted. I offered another scoop if he shared.
"I HEARD DADDY ON THE PHONE... HE SAID I'M A PROBLEM."
Goosebumps appeared. "Are you sure, sweetheart?"
He looked serious. "He said, 'Little Jeremy is a problem.' I ran to my room after that. Mommy... will he leave like my first daddy?" He became tearful. My heart broke.
That evening, I approached Sam.⬇️
