If you live in NYC, this movie is a MUST SEE. "The Price of Sugar" will help you understand the events and history that led to the current crisis plaguing Dominicans of Haitian descent and will put our short film "Purgatorio" in context. Directed by Bill Haney, the "The Price of Sugar" was released in 2007 and is narrated by the late Paul Newman. It's also available online.

"The Price of Sugar" by Bill Haney This documentary shows the poor working conditions in the sugar cane plantations, and political control exerted by the Vicini family to stifle efforts to change the situation.

"Purgatorio" is an official selection of both the Pan African Film Festival and the San Diego Black Film Festival and screens in late January and early February. In the meantime, the NY Times has published another article detailing the human rights violations occurring in the DR and the ensuing statelessness of Dominicans of Haitian descent.

Deportations and violence have driven tens of thousands of people of Haitian descent from their homes in the Dominican Republic — while the world is silent.
