I paid a plumber almost $2,000 to fix a sewer line in my yard and this is what he installed. A bunch of white plastic pipes glued together with purple glue everywhere. GLUE. I asked him if that purple stuff was supposed to be all over the pipe and he said it’s “normal primer.” NORMAL?? It honestly looks like a middle school science project buried in my yard. Then he put this metal clamp thing in the middle and said that’s the repair. For two thousand dollars I expected something more professional than glued plastic. Is this actually how sewer repairs are done now?

My roofer tore off the old shingles and then suddenly paused the job, telling me he can’t install the new shingles on the existing slats. According to him, the roof needs to be fully covered with plywood sheathing first.
He says it’s required under modern building codes, but it would add about $8,000 to the total cost. I wasn’t expecting that at all, so now I’m trying to figure out if this is actually necessary or if I’m being upsold.

FOUNDATION PERIMETER DRAINAGE SYSTEM
This cross-sectional illustration demonstrates a specialized drainage solution designed to protect a building's foundation from water accumulation and hydrostatic pressure. By utilizing a combination of tiered excavation, permeable filtration layers, and a perforated pipe, the system effectively redirects surface runoff and groundwater away from the structure's base, preventing moisture-related damage such as basement flooding or structural erosion.

KEY COMPONENTS & FEATURES
• Perforated Drainage Pipe: Situated at the lowest point of the trench, this pipe collects groundwater that filters through the aggregate and transports it to a designated discharge point.
• Filter Fabric (Geotextile): A protective liner that separates the soil from the drainage gravel. It allows water to pass through while preventing fine sediment from clogging the pipe or the air gaps between the stones.
• River Stone Aggregate: The large, rounded stones provide high permeability, allowing water to flow rapidly toward the drain pipe while offering a decorative, finished look at the surface.
• Slope and Depth Dimensions: The diagram specifies a width of 1.2 m and a depth of 45 cm, ensuring a significant volume of water can be managed. The trench is sloped downward toward the pipe to utilize gravity for water movement.
• Foundation Interface: The system is installed directly against the concrete foundation wall, creating a "dry zone" that shields the vertical surface from constant saturation.

DESIGN SUMMARY
The image illustrates a robust French Drain or Perimeter Drain variant that balances functionality with landscape aesthetics. By replacing heavy, water-retaining soil with a deep bed of stone and a mechanical drainage outlet, the design ensures that water follows the path of least resistance away from the building. This is a critical component in civil engineering and residential construction for maintaining the long-term integrity of a structure’s foundation.

Spent $3,400 on new wood steps and railing, but right now they just look like raw treated lumber and rough cuts. The contractor says once it dries and gets stained it’ll look much better. Still feels pretty unfinished for that price..........,

🚽 The Invisible Monster Under Your Floorboards
Did you know your house is constantly trying to "breathe" through its "skin"? Most people think plumbing is just about water going down a hole. They’re wrong. If your plumbing doesn't "inhale" correctly, it will literally suck the life out of your sink traps, invited toxic, explosive sewer gases into your bedroom while you sleep. Here is the secret science of the "Plumbing Death Spiral" and how your house stays alive.
1. The "Straw" Effect (The Vent)
Imagine drinking a soda through a straw. If you put your finger over the top and pull the straw out, the liquid stays inside. This is a plumbing disaster.
* The Trap: Without the Vent Stack (the pipes going through your roof), your drains create a vacuum.
* The Failure: When you flush the toilet, that vacuum is so strong it will "reach" into your sink's P-trap and suck the water out.
* The Result: Once that water is gone, there is nothing stopping Methane and Hydrogen Sulfide from drifting into your kitchen.
2. The "Fatberg" (The Kitchen's Worst Enemy)
Look at the Grease Trap in the diagram. People treat their kitchen sink like a trash can.
* The Mistake: Pouring warm grease down the drain. It looks like liquid now, but as soon as it hits the cold pipes under the house, it turns into solid white rock.
* The 2% Rule: Because pipes only slope at a tiny 2% grade, that grease doesn't just "wash away." It sits there, collecting hair and food scraps until it forms a "Fatberg" that can crack a 4-inch PVC pipe.
3. The "Silent Gurgle" (The Warning Sign)
Have you ever heard your sink "glug-glug" when you flush the toilet?
* That is your house screaming for help.
* It means a vent is blocked (maybe by a bird's nest or ice). The system is struggling to find air, and it's trying to "breathe" through your sink. If you ignore the gurgle, a flood is coming next.
🛠️ The "Golden Rule" for Homeowners
"Water follows the path of least resistance, but Waste follows the path of Gravity." If you mess with the 2% slope or block the Vent, you aren't just dealing with a clog; you are fighting the laws of physics. And in a fight against gravity, gravity always wins.

So I hired this guy to fix what he called a “tiny leaking pipe” behind my wall, something he made sound like a quick little job. Tell me why I come back and my hallway looks like a whole damn construction site. My perfectly good hardwood floors ripped up, dust everywhere, tools scattered like he just finished filming a demolition show. All that destruction for one little pipe? Yeah okay.

And the best part is he standing there acting proud of the mess like I’m supposed to clap for it. Talking about he “needed more access.” Access to what, my entire floor? I told him I called you to fix a leak, not audition for Extreme Home Makeover in my hallway. Now he still expects full payment like everything went smooth. Yeah right. I’m not tipping somebody who turned a five-minute fix into a whole damn renovation project.

Rotten Deck 2x10” Joist. I’ve had a couple deck companies come out, and they all steered me to replace the whole deck. The joists all look about the same except for the one in the picture. This one rotten joist is in a high traffic area between the furniture.

I’ve also asked several local hardware people, and I’ve gotten mixed answers about sistering it or just replacing just the one joist. I’m guessing replacing is the better route based on the amount of damage. I’ve also read a few places that sistering it will cause the new board to rot faster.

I’m curious what Reddit thinks the best route would be if we plan on living in this home for the next 5-10+ years. Thanks!

The Secret to Perfect Water Pressure! 🚿🚰
Tired of a weak trickle when you’re trying to shower? The problem isn't necessarily your pump—it’s likely your installation! 🛠️
Here is why some setups work perfectly while others are a nightmare:
❌ Option A: Direct Connection
Water relies solely on gravity, but because there is no air outlet, air pockets get trapped in the lines. This creates resistance, resulting in very low pressure and poor flow.
❌ Option C: Poor Planning
A classic mistake! Using too many bends and elbows creates friction and "head loss." These obstacles slow down the water flow, leaving you with a frustratingly thin stream.
✅ Option B: The Winner!
This is the professional setup. The secret to success is installing a proper "Air Vent" (Vent Pipe). This vertical pipe allows trapped air to escape freely, letting the water descend with its full natural force. It’s the simplest way to achieve the high pressure needed for a great shower experience. 🌊
Next time you have repairs done or a new tank installed, make sure your plumber includes an air vent!

I AM FUMING. I called a plumber for a “minor drain issue” and somehow my entire living room floor got JACKHAMMERED like we’re installing a subway system. It was one clog. ONE. Now there’s a 25-foot trench running straight through my house like a concrete runway. He said they had to “replace the main line to prevent catastrophic backup.” CATASTROPHIC?? It flushed fine last week. And the best part? The $6,800 quote apparently doesn’t include “finish flooring restoration.” So I just paid nearly seven grand for a concrete scar down the middle of my home. Am I overreacting or did my simple clog turn into a full interior demolition project??
