The #1 question I get about my eye patch is: “Do you really have one eye?” Sometimes, I’m even asked to prove it. Take off your patch!! Let us see what’s underneath!! 😤

In all fairness, most people haven’t encountered a person with a bejeweled eye patch before. 💎 In media, eye patches are used to represent the toughness of pirates, or the villainous nature of characters like Elle Driver . . . not the whimsy of a partially blind 27-year-old (me). 🧚‍♀️

I personally love talking about my eye patches! They’re an extension of my personality and a way to embrace a very heavy loss. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to lift the patch and show you my bare socket. 😅 Instead, trust me when I say that the eyeball is gone, but my sparkle is NOT. ✨

Fun eye Barbie is here!! A few months ago, my friend Molly Burke told me she’d done some corporate consulting for a brand making a blind doll. They wanted some visible cue to convey her disability, and instead of the standard milky gray eyes you often see in media (which, in actuality, are not incredibly common in the blind community) Molly suggested they give the doll a “fun eye” (prosthesis). She sent the company photos of fun eyes for inspo, including mine! Such a huge win for representation, and an extra special reminder that fun eyes have a bigger impact than we even know 💗🫶

After losing vision in one eye, I refused to wear a patch for two solid years. I had ordered some very basic ones online, and hated feeling like I was hiding a part of myself. Halloween of 2023 I tried again . . . only this time, with a custom leather patch (inspired by Kill Bill’s Elle Driver). Having more of a say in the patch made me feel more confident in wearing it out. I wasn’t hiding — I was embracing my disability on my own terms. Since then, I’ve collected well over 20 patches, and I don’t anticipate stopping anytime soon!!

My friend and I used to talk about “getting better.” She had cancer. I had a mystery illness. I had spent the last five years incredibly sick, and she knew the feeling well. Healing felt so far away for us both. At times, it was nothing more than a fantasy. Still, we wondered how we’d feel, what we’d do, and where we’d go if we ~did~ someday get better.

My friend died less than three months later. I had eye surgery and finally found a treatment that worked for me.

The fantasy doesn’t feel the way I thought it would. I think about her and the “getting better” she dreamt of. How can you not feel guilty when you’re the only one who gets to talk about your medical issues in the past tense?

sounds exactly like something the antichrist would say, but OK. (full post on substack hehe) 🪽

A commenter once asked whether my prosthetic eye scared children. In my experience, kids are incredibly curious (if not painfully honest). But they can also be kinder and more understanding than adults. Recently, a little girl pointed out that I couldn’t blink — not as a judgment, but as a neutral observation. I was honest and explained how my prosthesis held my lid open. She nodded and immediately told me that if she had a fake eye, she’d want it to be sparkly too. 🥹 Another time, my ocularist’s daughter asked why I had gems on my eyes. “Just for looking pretty,” I told her. “You are already pretty without them,” she responded. Kids are amazing and so much more thoughtful than we give them credit for. And honestly, there’s a lot we could stand to learn from them — whether you have a prosthetic eye or not. 🥰
