September is California Wine Month! What better way to celebrate than with California wines paired with your favorite cheeses. Whether it’s an easy weeknight girl dinner with a glass of crisp sauvignon blanc or an epic weekend gathering of friends for a tasting with a cheeseboard the size of your coffee table and a California wine to match every bite, cheers to good company, great wine, and our favorite Golden State harvest!

Not sure if you should slice into that brie when you open your favorite Pinot Noir? Do it! There are no hard and fast “rules” for pairing wine and cheese, but here are some pairing guidelines that will really highlight flavors:
☁️ Fresh cheeses like goat chèvre + light, crisp Sauvignon Blanc
🧈 Bloomy rind cheeses like brie + buttery Chardonnay
🍷 Semi-firm cheeses like young cheddar and Monterey Jack + light-bodied fruity reds like gamay and pinot noir
🧀 Aged cheeses like vintage cheddar and gouda, and Parmigiano Reggiano are great for showcasing full-bodied white wines like viognier and the “annes,” marsanne and rousanne.
🍯 Washed-rind cheeses, which are full-fragranced cheeses best balanced with light-bodied wines with subtle honeyed or floral aromatics, like an off-dry white
🪾 Blue cheeses with sweeter wines to balance out the intensity, like late harvest riesling and semillon

🥂🍾 Of course, as I always say, when in doubt, get the bubbles out. California sparkling wine goes with everything!

🍉 watermelon kimchi because nothing goes to waste in this house, not even the rind

🐟 spicy braised back cod at yedang in buena park aka ktown south
🍣 budonoki, great vibe, if you’re in that area, 20/10 on the LA drive-time rating. ie worth a 20 minute drive (but maybe not the 50 it took me from the westside)

ssam jang and ginger scallion sauce
for wraps: lettuce, perilla leaves, pickled radish
also: shortrib galbi, mandu (dumplings), and japchae
kimchi, spicy pickled radish, carrots, onions, jang ajji, jalapeños, avocado and mango because it always goes with salmon, everything you have in the fridge, labubu, scrunchie, led mask, fan belt why are you still reading this

one time i went on a date with this guy, like 6’3” for real tall, lean, smelled like fresh laundry in the meadow, absolutely perfect, and we went for a walk along the beach after dinner and i told him i hate the beach and he laughed and said that’s ok. and then he told me doesn’t eat seafood, and i asked oh you’re allergic and he said no he hates fish, and i also laughed and so that was our last date.
anyway.
here’s a summer “seacuterie” platter board thing with smoked salmon, crab legs, salmon roe, and caviar.
eat it by yourself and not at the beach.
