For Black Women’s History Month, TV host and maven Tanya Hart spoke of her own journey as well how she has been influenced by other women including her mother, Jean Hinton; Mary Ann Shad Carey, the first woman in North America to publish a newspaper, the Provincial Freeman in 1853; her mother in law, Dr. Murlee Hart, a groundbreaking educator; and her daughter, Ayanna Hart, COO of a major film company, Fancy Film.
Tanya Hart worked for WBZ, the CBS affiliate in Boston, for eleven years before moving to Los Angeles in 1990 and joining BET’s West Coast production operations team where she helped launch the first program in BET’s Burbank Studios. There, Hart served as host and senior producer of BET’s, “Live From LA with Tanya Hart,” where she interviewed celebrities. Also in 1990, Hart interviewed Winnie Mandela during her world tour with Nelson Mandela, for a U.S. television exclusive. In 1992, Hart was based at the Walt Disney Studios, where her company, Tanya Hart Communications, developed and produced films, television programs, syndicated radio programs, and music. In 1995, Hart became an entertainment correspondent on the KACE-FM morning show in Los Angeles and served as a host with Roger Ebert covering the Academy Awards.
For six years, Hart served as a correspondent and alternate host of E! Entertainment's The Gossip Show and for four years she hosted the daily syndicated radio feature “Hart Moments." In 2003, excerpts from her interview with Shakur were featured in the documentary “Tupac: Resurrection” and in 2005, she released her debut album, “Tanya Hart Sings.” In 2016, Hart was elected as co-chair of The Caucus for Producers, Writers & Directors, making her the first African-American and first woman to head the 40-year-old entertainment industry trade organization
