I will most definitely miss the magnificent moments I have shared with The Molotov Cocktail.

A significant milestone in KXLU history happens tonight as our pal - the lovely host of Soiree Musicale, Yolanda, helms her last broadcast. She's shared the airwaves with us almost since our inception, and while we're sad to see her sign off, it's been a pleasure to follow her golden voiced broadcast for decades. It's also been a kick to have Yolanda ride shotgun on our annual specials, "The Soulstice of Soul," and "The Martin Denny Easter Special," joining us on live remotes, meeting listeners and adding her sparkling wit and class to the proceedings. If you wish to call up and send her your well wishes, give her a bell tonight at (310) 338-5958 during her show from 8-10PM. We wish her a fond Aloha and as Scotsman Jimmy Shand would say "Guid Luck Go Wi' Ye." Below are some moments through the years of Yolanda with the Molotov Gang at various highlights of celebration.

The pandemic sidelined many of us from our normal routines. I was fortunate enough to do my first live broadcast in over 2 years at the beginning of July. It felt fun, familiar and final. After 30 plus years, I am saying goodbye to my weekly DJ responsibilities. July 26th, tonight, will be the last time I Broadcast Live as host of Soiree Musicale on 88.9 KXLU FM. Please tune in to the final show over the radio at 88.8 FM or online kxlu.com 8-10 PM Tuesday.

Tonight is my final Show. As it coincides with the final Tuesday of the month, I will be featuring various selections from Film Scores.

Classical Conducters

Love this brilliant image celebrating women conductors! It beautifully illustrates the focus, determination, and artistry that it takes for a conductor to direct a stellar performance, but rarely do you see such a montage featuring women. Although women conductors have become more common in recent years, they are still highly underrepresented on the podium. According to the classical music website Bachtrack, as of 2014, of the world's top 150 conductors, only five were women. At A Mighty Girl, we look forward to seeing many of the Mighty Girls of today raising the conductor’s baton in the future!

The conductors featured in this image from Classic FM are from left to right, top to bottom: Anu Tali, co-founder of the Nordic Symphony Orchestra; Joana Carneiro, principal conductor of the Orquestra Sinfonica Portuguesa; JoAnn Falleta, who has conducted for over 70 recordings, including albums focused on the works of female composers; Han-na Chang, renowned as both a cello soloist and a conductor; Sarah Ioannides, the first female music director for the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra; Barbara Hannigan, operatic singer and conductor; Shi-Yeon Sung, associate conductor of the Seoul Philharmonic; Susanna Malkki, who will become the chief conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra next year; and Marin Alsop, conductor of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the first female conductor to direct the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms concert.
