Los Angeles, California: It is just a shade over 50 years since Fleetwood Mac - already regarded among rock’s elder statesmen - completely reinvented themselves, stepping away from the blues rock for which they were renowned, and throwing open the doors, instead, to a whole new brand of Adult Oriented Rock.

With new recruits Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks now on board, Mac’s re-emergence at the top of the charts was impressive from the outset - the first single from their eponymous 11th album, “Over My Head,” planted them in the Billboard Top 20 for the first time ever!

But it was “Rhiannon,” written and sung by Nicks, which truly set the band on course for superstardom, a #11 hit which also helped birth an entire new generation of witchy women . Coupled with Nicks’ eldritch stage demeanor, what she described in concert as “a song about a Welsh witch” became a deathless touchstone for all.

Now Femme Fatale’s Lorraine Lewis, Cleopatra’s Queen of Metal, breathes a whole new energy and impact into the song. Accompanied by the devastating power of George Lynch (Lynch Mob), Corey Parks and Greyson Nekrutman, the opening cut from the forthcoming tribute Steel Rumours - The Songs Of Fleetwood Mac Reforged In Metal harnesses all the mystique and power of Fleetwood Mac’s original, but alchemizes it, too, into a firestorm of electrifying intent and intensity.

Lorraine explains, “Stevie Nicks is one of those rare artists who doesn’t just sing a song, she creates an entire world around it. ‘Rhiannon’ has always had that magic for me. It’s mysterious, powerful, feminine and completely unapologetic.

“Stevie made Rhiannon into this unforgettable, almost mythical rock ’n’ roll woman, and as a female rock singer, I connect deeply with that energy. I love songs that allow you to step into a character and own the stage, and ‘Rhiannon’ gives you that opportunity in spades. Getting to put my own stamp on such an iconic Stevie Nicks song is an absolute honor.”

Guitarist George Lynch continues, “Anytime I’m asked to work on a classic rock song. He certainly succeeds! Indeed, this amazing version of “Rhiannon” exquisitely setts the stage for the remainder of this audacious collection.

L.A. Guns Invite You To Join Them For Some Purple Painted Space Truckin'

Los Angeles, California: It’s the kind of sonic collision you have always dreamed of - one of the heaviest metal anthems of the 1970s, reimagined in the hands of one of the mightiest metal bands of the decades that came after.

But even in those dreams, it never sounded this great!
​
Taken from Cleopatra’s upcoming Purple Storm - A Tribute To Deep Purple, L.A. Guns’ balls-breaking take on “Space Truckin’” was something of a career-long ambition for the band.
​
“Deep Purple is one of our biggest influences,” says Tracii Guns. “So any excuse to play one of their songs, we will take.” And, he continues, “Phil [Lewis] and I chose this song because we just wanted something we could blast out on.”
​
And they definitely do blast!
​
First heard back in 1972, wrapping up Purple’s seminal Machine Head album, “Space Truckin'’” was inspired, Ritchie Blackmore once remarked, by the theme to the Batman TV show. It developed, however, into one of Purple’s most dramatic showstoppers, a cavalcade of soloing that was capable, some nights, of stretching to 30 minutes in length!

Or cut to Purple’s infamous appearance at the 1974 California Jam, where Blackmore ended “Space Truckin'” by slamming his guitar into a television camera, and then lit his amplifier on fire!
​
There are no such shenanigans here, of course - L.A.’s finest bring the song to a halt just shy of five minutes. Nevertheless, Adam Hamilton’s production keeps everything on the edge of its seat, and Tracii’s incendiary guitar more than compensates for the absence of visuals.

Of course, there's a multitude of further Purple classics featured on Purple Storm - 11 of them to be precise, including “Highway Star,” “Child In Time,” “Smoke On The Water,” “Woman From Tokyo,” “Black Night”… each of them paramount among the songs that truly confirmed Purple’s superstardom, both at the outset of their career (“Hush,” their debut US hit single) and into later years too (the title track from 1984’s Perfect Strangers).

CHEETAH CHROME REMEMBERED BY HIS FRIEND MICHAEL MONROE (HANOI ROCKS)

Los Angeles, California: Although Cheetah Chrome, who passed away on Sunday September 14, is best remembered - and rightfully so!!! - for his peerless performances with the Dead Boys, truly one of New York (and, therefore, the United States)’s most unique and powerful punk bands, his career subsequently saw his razorsharp guitar unleashed alongside a plethora of other artists, from New York Doll Sylvain Sylvain to Jeff Dahl; from 69 Eyes to the UK Subs.
​
Most recently, however, his focus was on a new album, set to be released next year by Cleopatra Records - a label with which he has been associated for several years, and for whom he opened his archive to reveal some of the most electrifying of all unreleased Dead Boys recordings.
​
In that time, he also became one of the label’s dearest and most valued friends, both musically and socially.
​
For all who knew and loved him, however, his final project might well be his most meaningful, a celebration of the Dead Boys that he summed up just a few months ago, with typical Cheetah economy and humor, by saying, “The whole thing is PFG… Pretty Fu***ng Good.”.
​
The album is fronted by a variety of guest singers, including Cheetah as well as Hanoi Rocks frontman Michael Monroe, who gave us thoughts on the legend that was Cheetah, and the music they made together.
​
“So sad to hear that the legendary Cheetah Chrome is gone.
​
“He was a dear friend and one of the last true Punk Rock’n'Roll icons.
​
“The past couple of years I've been working with him on a "Dead Boys Celebration”- Album (with Cheetah Chrome & Friends) which is going to be great. It features some cool guest singers as well as Cheetah and myself on vocals, doing some old Dead Boys & Cheetah stuff and some of Cheetah’s favourite cover songs.
​
“The band featured Clem Burke on drums, Glen Matlock on bass and Cheetah on guitar, with James Williamson guesting on one track on guitar. I guess now that record will be even more significant when it comes out.
​
“Rest in peace, my friend.”

PLASMATICS AXEMAN RICHIE STOTTS AND KING FLUX CELEBRATE THE REIGN OF THE INSANE

Los Angeles, California: If you happened to be around the Cat Club in New York City anytime around the mid-1980s, chances are you remember King Flux, and with very good reason.

They were a fabulous band, of course. But they also felt like a personal secret, shared between the members of a dedicated audience, but unknown to anyone else.

No record labels were pushing them in all manner of directions, no management hassling them to write “a hit.” King Flux just got up and played their music, blew the crowd away, and that would be it until the next time they played. Frontman Richie Stotts describes them as “a mom and pop organization,” and he’s right.

“Following the devastation of losing my gig with the Plasmatics,” he explains, “it didn’t take long to feel a sense of freedom. There was no management anymore. No financing from a record label. And yet, it seemed so organic just creating music and relying on the assistance of friends who came together to get the word out. It was like a mini King Flux compound of people building sets, designing logos, postering the city and getting the word out without Instagram.”

And the Cat Club, a two level bar on E 13th, equipped with its very own cage dancers, was their home from home.

King Flux never made a record during their lifetime. Of course the band received offers from record labels - plenty of them, in fact. They turned them all down… or rather, as Richie puts it, he turned them down. “Mr. Smarty Pants Stotts didn’t think they were big enough,” he says with a possibly rueful laugh.

But they recorded a lot of material and now, a full 40 years on, Richie has cracked open the vault, for a forthcoming album of hard riffing rock’n’roll and, released today as a limited edition 7-inch single, alongside all digital platforms, a single of “Reign Of The Insane,” one of the key numbers in the band’s period live show.

“‘Reign Of The Insane’ was a lot of fun to write,” recalls Richie.. “I pulled lyrical inspiration from a bunch of different places, including Ronald Reagan’s famous over-use of the phrase ‘Back in the saddle again.’ For the rap section, I went straight to the headlines of the New York Post and worked some of that tabloid insanity into the lyrics.

“One line in particular was inspired by the headline: ‘Rock star’s wife beats murder rap.’

“That was a reference to Gail Collins Pappalardi, the wife of Mountain bassist Felix Pappalardi, who was charged with second-degree murder after shooting and killing Felix in 1983. She was ultimately acquitted. The shooting took place in the same building—Waterside Plaza—that my brother Wayne was living in at the time.

“You couldn’t make this stuff up. Whoa!”

LEONARD GRAVES PHILLIPS SPILLS ALL IN THRILLING AUTOBIOGRAPHY THE DICKIES AND ME

Los Angeles, California: Leonard Graves Phillips, co-founder and lifelong member of Californian punk icons The Dickies, is poised to reveal all about his 50 year career with the band, in a hefty, high-quality hardback autobiography.

Published on August 21, The Dickies And Me comprises some 50 chapters spread across 230+ pages, all packed with the extreme ups and down of one of the longest-running punk bands in existence ,as well as stories from Leonard's turbulent life.

A riot of absurdist humor and thoughtful reflection, the story is accompanied by a host of incredible behind-the-scenes photos, and cartoon illustrations by the brilliant KRK Ryden who has collaborated with Devo and others.

It is half a century since Leonard, his friends Bob “Chuck Wagon” Davis and guitarist Stan Lee, plus bassist Billy Club and drummer Karlos Kaballero, first emerged as The Dickies - and swiftly became the first California punk band to appear on network TV and score a major record deal.

A lot of musicians, deals and music have passed through the ranks since those frenetic beginnings, but still The Dickies remain true to their original ideals, a breakneck good-times punk band that is as comfortable maiming rock’n’roll’s most sacred cows as it is quick firing out its own wild compositions.

Such recent singles as “ Gary Glitter Getaway,” “I Dig Go-Go Girls,” and last year’s blistered take on the David Cassidy smash “Cherish” are as resoundingly classic Dickies fare as any of the hits from their earliest years - “Nights In White Satin,” “Gigantor,, “Paranoid," "Banana Splits."

For 50 years, too, The Dickies’ influence upon the American punk scene has proven incalculable, as they first defined and then regularly reinvented what the music meant.

Leonard says, “Writing in autobiographical terms is like shining a flashlight around a vast, darkened warehouse, landing on significant moments that lead one through the labyrinth.”

“Much of the focus is on the original band (of which Stan Lee and I are the remaining members), its formation, and our halcyon days with A&M Records, especially in England.” However, it reaches out from there, he acknowledges, to chronicle “my life before, during, and (metaphysically speaking) after The Dickies.”

He writes of the music that inspired him to follow this course, recalling the first time he ever heard The Ramones (“on a local radio station in Los Angeles”), their “Blitzkrieg Bop” anthem scything through the airwaves as he and a friend were out driving.

The Dickies themselves were already up and running, although Leonard’s original intention was to lead a prog rock band. That changed as bands like The Quick and the UK’s visiting The Damned followed The Ramones into his heart. Then, as the local scene began embracing a sound that was as far from the American mainstream as it was possible to travel, so The Dickies pushed themselves to the front of the queue.

Even their first manager, John Hewlett - former bassist with English freakbeat heroes John’s Children - was checking out another band entirely the night he first saw The Dickies, but by the end of their set, he knew his evening was complete.

"From the moment I saw The Dickies, I thought they were great, they were everything I’ve ever looked for in a band. To me, they were what Steven Spielberg and George Lucas are to films, putting everything in and getting the most out again.” Anybody familiar with John’s Children’s own music and legend will recognize that as high praise indeed.

As for The Dickies’ legacy, Stan is unequivocal in his awareness of what the band means. “The Dickies were spawned as a direct answer to what punk rock was in 1977. Our influences were such bands as The Ramones, The Damned, and even the Buzzcocks. A common thread among us is that we were influenced by the ’60s and ’70s pop that came before us.

“In contrast, present-day punk bands draw mainly from a pre-existing punk well. Stan once said, “We’re a pop band masquerading as a punk band.” His statement has its merits, but it is not entirely true. We were and are a punk rock band in every respect. We just happen to be musical."

And very, very entertaining!
