In a heartbreaking development this week, the young calf that was delighting whale watchers here in San Diego the past month with its exuberant behaviors has gone missing. We know this, because we have seen it’s mother two days in a row, with the calf nowhere to be found. At only around 4 months old, this calf should still be with its mom for the next 6-8 months, but unfortunately it appears something tragic has happened. We were off the water for a week due to rough sea conditions, but the last time we saw this pair, mom was surface feeding and the calf was playfully breaching. However, on Monday and Tuesday of this week, mom ate alone. It’s a heartbreaking reminder of how fragile life can be. Mom was acting strange on Tuesday, she hung in the water upside down with her tail above the surface. She thrashed her flukes back and fourth on the surface, smacking the water with each side of her tail for nearly three consecutive minutes. Was this a show of grief? We know these highly sentient animals feel a wide range of emotions, and while it’s unwise to over-anthropomorphize cetaceans, I can’t help but wonder if that was the equivalence to a human punching a wall in a vat of overwhelming emotion.

We will likely never know what happened to this little whale, but I’ll remember it for the breaches like the one in the clip above.
