Long sappy vulnerable thoughts coming. Brace yourself.
I don’t do New Year’s resolutions, but at the start of each year, I choose one word to focus on in the upcoming months. The year we moved to Denver only to be welcomed by a pandemic, my word was grace. The year I wrote a novel the word was consistency. The year we moved back to Los Angeles and I reopened Lady B’s, my word was hustle.
This year my word was community. The years of early parenthood, lockdowns, building businesses, and cross country moves had left my little family, (and a lot of our loved ones) isolated and I was determined to fix it.
So at midnight on NYE, I ate 12 raisins because I was out of grapes and chose my word. Three days later, my dog died. Three weeks after that my father passed. Life threw a few other sucker punches that winter. As so often comes during ungraceful periods of grief, when people keep their distance lest it be contagious, the isolation cut deeper. I was scared I wasn’t keeping my word.
But I kept at it, pouring into my small but mighty village and cookie biz. And my family grew.🌸 The order board got bigger. My cookie coven welcomed more kitchen witches. My kid and his hilarious and HUNGRY group of friends won’t stop growing, their laughter filling my kitchen as they strip my pantry bare. My hubs and I made a pact to bring back our themed dinner parties. I’ve made time to laugh, sing, bake with old and new friends. I stopped focusing on who wasn’t loving me and put my energy into who needed my love.
And then last month one of my videos went a little viral on IG opened the door a bit more. I’ve met cookie artists I’ve looked up to for years. So many new clients appeared on my doorstep in the shape of neighbors. Connections with incredible women across Los Angeles. Jokes texted. “This made me think of you”s traded in the DMs. Help offered. Opportunities shared. Hugs given. Friends made. Community.
So just after midnight last night, when that little IG notification popped up as I doomscrolled & snacked on grapes, “Congrats! You’re reached 10,000 followers,” I knew. I’m keeping my word. And I’m just so thankful for my community.
Across all the platforms, there are now almost 30,000 of you. Thank you to all so very much for supporting this sweet little dream of mine.💖
