Steven Spielberg May Direct A Remake Of ‘West Side Story’

(Skip to 3:21 for the West Side Story news)This is one of those headlines where as I was writing it, I realized that only a handful of movie goers will actually give a sh*t. But I really don’t give a sh*t who gives a sh*t other than the people who give a sh*t about Bernstein and Sondheim’s classic musical West Side Story (a musical which is pretty much unanimously considered one of the greatest of all time [GOAT].) And to have a clip of Steven Spielberg (who is also considered a GOAT) mentioning even just a casual interest in directing a version of West Side Story, well that’s something worth sharing with the handful of movie goers who will care. That’s some GOAT on GOAT action (click that link, I dare you) and there is nothing that makes me more excited than two GOATS going balls deep into each other to make something amazing (probably another GOAT). Kevin Jagernauth shared this exciting news over at Indiewire:Remember those reports in the spring that the director was eyeballing a redo of Robert Wise‘s classic “West Side Story“? Well, it would seem it’s still on the brain. In a recent interview on “Good Morning America” alongside Oprah Winfrey to promote “The Hundred-Foot Journey,” the director was asked about “West Side Story,” and he confirmed it was something he was still interested in. “Well you know something, ‘West Side Story’ is one of my favourite Broadway musicals and one of the greatest pieces of musical literature, my goodness, one of the greatest scores and some of the greatest lyrics ever written for a musical so just let me put it this way: it’s on my mind,” he said. And it’s kinda curious in that statement he didn’t once mention the 1961 movie….I wouldn’t focus too much on Spielberg not mentioning the Robert Wise film – I’m certain he’s seen it. And I’m even more certain that he loves it. How could he not? How could anyone not? It’s the bomb! If you are one of those people who’s avoided seeing West Side Story because you’ve only ever seen that sh*tty Gap commercial for khakis, then I implore you to watch the video below. It’ll change your opinion.

Weekend Box Office: ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Grosses $93.7 Million Worldwide, Well Above Expectations

ParamountYou guys, I’ve got some crazy news. Some news that could shock you. Are you sitting down? Do you have a tight grip on your pants and/or butts? Okay, now that you’ve been suitably prepared, it turns out, the much-hyped Michael Bay-produced remake of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles made lots of money this weekend, even though it was mostly sorta mediocre and no one really liked it (19% on RottenTomatoes, B Cinemascore). Crazy, right? I know. Literally no one could’ve predicted this.Specifically, it earned $65 million domestic (on a $125 million budget). This even though early projections had it coming in as low as $40 to $45 million. But nostalgia is shockingly powerful . The interest in this movie has been through the roof since it was announced, which is fairly baffling to me for something that I thought was kind of dumb even when I was 11. Remember cartoons?! Remember pizza?! Radical, dude! And let’s be honest, no one ever expected it to be any good. It was being produced by Michael Bay and directed the Battle: Los Angeles guy for God’s sake. That kind of resume is the cinematic equivalent of “I’ve been to prison” scrawled on a napkin. Maybe it benefited financially from rock bottom expectations? The film played 61% male, 55% over-25 years old, and 36% Hispanic. It has also earned $93.7m worldwide as it debuted in 19 international markets as well. What was Paramount’s marketing strategy? No Fear. They didn’t respond to critics and pundits decrying Michael Bay as the ruiner of childhoods, the weird new designs, or who was or wasn’t playing Shredder and if the turtles were or were not aliens. [Forbes]Hmm, that sounds plausible enough, but at the same time, what would a “fearful” marketing strategy entail? It’s not like the ads were going to say “we may have blown this one, so use your judgment!” Marketing is marketing, no matter how much the product sucks.Among the other new major releases this week were Into The Storm, which I don’t remember seeing a single ad for, which grossed $18 million domestically on a $50 million budget. About the same opening as the director’s last film, Final Destination 5, which I still can’t believe wasn’t called 5nal Destination. It’s too early to tell if it will make back its $50 million budget (my money’s on no). Then there was The Hundred-Foot Journey aka The Best Exotic Tuscan Marigold Salmon Fishery, aka Travel P**n For Moms, which grossed $11.1 million domestically. Not exactly setting the world on fire, but as BoxOfficeMojo …

Lindsay Lohan Swears She Won’t Miss Any Performances In Her West End Debut

BBCLindsay Lohan is currently in London, where she’s gearing up for a 10-week West End performance in David Mamet’s Speed-The-Plow, which she’s ostensibly hoping will rehabilitate her image. Although rehearsals for the show, which debuts in September, haven’t begun yet, Lohan is adamant that she’s not going to screw this one up this time. In a recent interview with the BBC’s arts editor Will Gompertz, Gompertz asks in the most polite, British way possible if there was any chance that she wouldn’t be showing up to rehearsals and performances every single day. She was quick to shoot him down, saying, “That’s not in the cards. That’s not going to happen.”“I want to be known for my talents and my work that I create, rather than a tabloid sensation,” she said. “However long it does take, I’m willing to do it. I’m willing to work for it.”“There’s a different standard to it here. It seems more prestigious. It seems a bit more serious and that’s something that I really want to experience.”The thing about Lindsay is that she honestly doesn’t seem to understand why on Earth anyone would be skeptical of her talent or commitment. Now, while I’m no actor, it’s my understanding that live theater is the most grueling undertaking for an actor, while being the subject of a reality show is probably the easiest. So, recalling that Lindsay Lohan even managed to consistently flake on her own reality show, we’re supposed to take it as face value that this theatrical performance shall go flawlessly? Ooookay.Good luck, West End’s Speed-The-Plow producers, you brought this on yourself.Filed under: Web Culture Tagged: Lindsay Lohan, london, SPEED THE PLOW, THEATER

"In the face of so many challenges and obstacles, you're still asking the hard questions," she told the audience. "How do we instill in them that hunger for education?""There are still too many young people in this country who aren't getting the education they need," she continued. "Too many young people in the Latino community just aren't fulfilling their potential."Read more on page 2 >>>According to Fox News Latino, Michelle Obama launched an education initiative earlier this year called Reach Higher. The initiative seeks to get more low-income youth in college.Obama noted in her speech that her parents did not attend college. She grew up in a working class home in the South Side of Chicago, and her father worked as a pump operator for the Chicago Water Department while her mother stayed at home. Her parents -- despite their lack of education -- always encouraged her to strive for college."We have to reignite that hunger for education," she said. "Parents have to be reading to their kids from an early age and make sure they go to school every day and do their homework every night. Amber Valletta Reveals Her Drug and Alcohol Addiction

Amber Valletta has revealed her battle with drugs and alcohol in a new video."I suffer from a disease called addiction," the model-turned-actress told the wellness website MindBodyGreen.com. "I've had it for as long as I can remember."Valletta, 40, says she started looking for ways to get high since she was 8 years old because she was "uncomfortable being a human being.""I sniffed markers, I sniffed glue, fingernail polish, anything that could give me a buzz," she says.By the time she was 22 and her modeling career was at its peak, Valletta was abusing co***ne and alcohol."I had a multimillion [dollar] deal and I showed up the first day to shoot this campaign high and drunk," she admits. "I didn't care and that's just to show you addiction takes you to the worst places."The Oklahoma native says the modeling industry contributed to her disease. "I was in a business that drugs and alcohol were widely acceptable and they were given to me."But she takes full responsibility for her actions. "I am not a victim," she says. "I don't blame anything that happened to me that was negative."Valletta sought help at 25 because she "didn't want to die.""I had to be willing to lift the veil off the shame and say, 'I'm addict, I can't do this alone, I don't want to do this alone, I don't feel comfortable, can you help me?' "After staying sober for 15 years, the model-turned-actress – whose new show Legends premieres on TNT in August – hopes to inspire others by sharing her story."My hope is that someone, somewhere in this room, out of this room will hear something that will help them and perhaps get them out of the shadows and the darkness of addiction and bring them into the light."
