So I wanted to bring awareness to the fact that despite the fact that rat terriers and jack Russells were originally bred to hunt rats and and other small wild life animals.

It's important to know that you should never let your jack Russell or rat terrier sink it's teeth into a rat with the objective to kill it.

Rats carry a bunch of diseases and poisoning from bate traps etc and while it's nice to know that jack Russells and rat terriers can keep rats away.

We still have to be careful about it because the after math can be fatal to your dog's health.

Here is a further breakdown from research..

a rat terrier can die from killing a rat if the rat was poisoned and eaten, leading to secondary poisoning in the dog.

Additionally, Dogs can contract bacterial infections like Leptospirosis or parasites from rodents, which can be serious or fatal.

You should contact your veterinarian immediately if your dog consumes a dead rat, bringing any available poison packaging for identification.

Dangers of Eating a Poisoned Rat
Secondary Poisoning: Rats that have ingested rat bait can still be toxic to dogs when eaten, leading to illness or death.

Rat Bait Toxins: Different poisons affect dogs in various ways. For instance, bromethalin (a type of poison) can be dangerous at very small doses, and cholecalciferol (Vitamin D) causes kidney damage.

Seek Immediate Veterinary Care: If your dog has consumed a poisoned rat, contact a vet or a 24-hour veterinary facility right away.

Other Risks from Rodent Contact
Bacterial Infections: Dogs can contract Leptospirosis from rats, which can cause serious illness and even death.

Parasites- Rats can carry parasites like fleas and ticks that can be passed to your dog, causing discomfort or illness.

Contact your vet if you notice any signs of illness such as..

Vomiting or diarrhea
Lethargy or fever
Signs of kidney damage (increased thirst, trouble urinating)
Unusual behavior
