Orquídea is cursed with incredible luck. After five husbands, she never leaves home. Her children and grandchildren come home for her death, but she doesn’t die, and they are cursed. Lots of fantastical things happen, but I never saw the point.

Two key descendants are granddaughter Marimar and grandson Rey. They are both through her second husband. Marimar’s mother is daughter Pena. Rey’s mother is daughter Parcha. Two others are Tati and her daughter Rhiannon. Tatu’s father is Orquidea’s third husband, Hector. Orquidea’s half-sister Ana Cruz also has a major role in this story, along with the Londoño Spectacular Spectacular, a traveling circus, sideshow, and carnival. The book felt like a bad psychedelic trip.

The two truths in Steph’s life are that she is a le***an, and she wants to be a NASA astronaut. Often, these are in opposition. It is difficult to have a social life when she is constantly working to have a resume attractive to NASA and to maintain her fitness. Also, NASA regulations conflict with her desire for a le***an relationship.
