Children in a sweet shop in fillebrook Avenue, Enfield. 1954.

Fillebrook Avenue, Enfield, in 1954, captures a snapshot of post-war Britain, a time marked by recovery and transformation. Enfield, a borough in North London, was undergoing significant changes as the country rebuilt itself. The 1950s saw a boom in housing developments, with new estates popping up to accommodate the growing population.

Fillebrook Avenue, like many streets in Enfield during this period, reflected the architectural styles of the time, with modest, semi-detached houses and neatly kept gardens. The sense of community was strong, with neighbours often knowing each other well and children playing in the streets.

An interesting fact about Enfield is that it is home to the world's first cash machine. Installed at the Enfield Town branch of Barclays Bank in 1967, this invention revolutionised banking by allowing customers to withdraw money outside of regular banking hours. Although this event occurred a few years after 1954, it highlights Enfield's contribution to modern convenience and technological advancement.

Now that's a big flower! 🌺🤯
The world’s biggest flower, Rafflesia arnoldii, West Sumatra, Indonesia. This flower has blooms that can grow to be over three feet in diameter and weigh up to 20 pounds.
Indeed the largest flower but also the smelliest! And, to the human nose, not in a good way: its gigantic petals emit a putrid scent like rotting flesh to attract pollinators and prey.

One of my own photos. I took this shot of rancher Morris Vann on the Jackson Ranch in 2009. The Jackson Ranch is about 15 miles west of Lampasas. It's hard to believe I took this 15 years ago. I'd been there for an hour or two, waiting on Morris to show. Finally he drove up on this ATV. He'd been out checking on his cattle. Morris was maybe 5'8" and 140 .lbs soaking wet, but wiry and tough as an old boot. He was a kind man and a great Texan and he had some wonderful stories and a lot of wisdom.

I remember on this particular occasion we were driving around the ranch in his truck when we pulled up on a mostly dry stock tank. Morris said that for pretty much his whole life he'd wondered how a stock tank with no connection to a creek or stream could go completely dry for months and then, a month or two after a rain, have fish in it. Then he said that, a few years before, he'd had a biologist from Texas A&M out on the ranch when he thought to ask him. The biologist told Morris that wading birds like Great Blue Herons and Egrets would wade around in a creek or a river and fish eggs would get attached to their legs or bodies. Then they fly off to a stock tank, where some of the eggs would peel off and ... instant fish. Morris slapped his thigh and, with a twinkle in his eye said "pretty smart, those A&M fellers!"

Morris died at the age of 89 in 2016. He was revered by all who knew him and there's hardly a day that goes by that I don't think of him. It occurs to me that I should write a series of posts about some of the remarkable folks I've met along this journey.

While walking down a trail during a camping trip last week, I saw a woodpecker hole in a dead tree off in the distance. While looking at it I thought I saw a small head peeking out at me, but to make sure, I used my camera with a long lens to take a better look. Sure enough it was a fledgling pileated woodpecker - the Woody Woodpecker kind! I stuck around for a little while to see the adults returning to feed them, but the afternoon light was a bit harsh so decided to return the next morning, under better lighting conditions, in hopes of capturing a good photo of them. I certainly earned this one though, as I had to walk through high grass and palmettos to get close enough and at a good angle to the nest. Then I waited there for an hour for one of the adults to return to the nest, knowing I was going to pay for it later with itching chigger bites - and I’m still paying for it!😬 However, it was all worth it, as I watched and photographed both adults feed all three of these voraciously hungry chicks.

Flames of the Forest: The Plight of the Malaysian Fire Snail 🐌🐚
The Malaysian fire snail, scientifically named Platymma tweediei, is a marvel of nature. Its most striking feature is its black shell, which contrasts beautifully with its vibrant red or orange foot. However, this colouration makes them resemble a small flame navigating through the vegetation, a sight that is quite strange and fascinating. An elongated, spirited red to orange colored foot is another striking feature that makes a snail easily sighted amongst the background of a dark forest floor.
The Malaysian fire snail is found exclusively in the high-altitude forests of Peninsular Malaysia. These forests are located at elevations above 1,000 meters. Simly, it is by providing a cool and moist environment that the snail needs to thrive. These highland forests have some specific conditions necessary in the snail’s environment since these forms of weather provide the preferred level of humidity and temperature that this worm might require. So, they are typically associated with mist, and they can also be seen as being both magical and vital to the snail’s life cycle.
