The app you need before your next tech scout 🎥📲


I’ve shared how I create my shot lists before, but I haven’t really broken down how I got the reference images for nearly all 67 shots in Morning Shed.

A huge part of that process was Cadrage, a director’s viewfinder app that let me use our actual locations to test the camera format, aspect ratio and lenses we were planning to shoot with.

Since Morning Shed was shot on 16mm film, being able to visualize what different lenses would actually give us in each space helped me figure out my framing, capture references for my shot list, and walk onto set already knowing so much more about the film I wanted to make. 🎞️

Because when you’re shooting on film, prep is EVERYTHING.

And these references weren’t just useful for me — they helped communicate the visual plan to my DP, crew and talent before we were racing against the clock on set.

My shot list is a diva đź’… and she works HARD for her money.

We just wrapped MORNING SHED, my latest short film, and captured 65 of our 67 planned shots in just two days — working day to night, interiors + exteriors, and across two different film cameras. 🎥

And one of the greatest tools I had on set? My shot list.
Throughout pre-production, my team and I worked from one centralized, color-coded Google Sheet that kept everything in one place — frame size, lenses, camera, location, SFX, special props, production notes + all those tiny details you do not want to be figuring out when the clock is ticking on set.

Having that planning done ahead of time meant my team knew exactly what we needed for every setup — and I could spend less time worrying about logistics and more time actually directing my actors and being present in the rehearsal process. Especially when you’re shooting on film and every foot counts. 🎞️

This is the actual shot list system I use on my own films, and I’m so stoked to finally share the template with you. 💌

One of the most valuable directing tools I own isn’t a camera. It’s a spreadsheet. 💅

This is the exact Google Sheets shot list system I use when directing my own films—including Morning Shed, the 16mm short I’m currently preparing to shoot.

It keeps my references, framing, lenses, camera movement, locations, notes, and visual ideas all in one place that I can easily share with my producer, DP, AD, and the rest of the crew.
Over the years I’ve refined this workflow through trial and error, and it’s become one of the most important tools I use before stepping onto set.

So today I’m finally sharing it.
