If you were in Los Angeles last week, you may have caught Andrew Bird at The Greek theater with Iron & Wine. The Grammy-nominated musician, songwriter, and composer showcased some of his new album, Inside Problems, which was recorded down the road here at United with producer MikeViola and engineer David Boucher.
Check out the MiX MAGAZINE interview for more details on their straight-to-tape recording process, the gear they used, mic set-ups, etc. Viola explains how he used the acoustics of the studios at United Recording: “United B is a special room; everybody I’ve ever worked with in that room is spoiled by its magic. While there are plenty of studios around town with world-class gear, there is something about the acoustics of that room that draws the ingredient X out of every performance.”
Catch Andrew Bird on his 'Outside Problems Tour' this summer with Iron & Wine, and select dates with Neko Case and Meshell Ndegeocello.

Wishing a very Happy Birthday to Leland Sklar! Studio A was the very first studio that Leland was ever in. In 1967 Mike Post was producing his band Group Therapy with all of the Wrecking Crew players. Leland gave a quick tour of United last year while tracking Lari Basilio's new album.
You can watch his full tour on his Youtube Channel.
Nothing quite like a Bill Putnam designed room. The first project cut at United in 1958 was Ricky Nelson’s “Poor Little Fool” and later that same year Ella Fitzgerald is known to have recorded here. Since then, United has been a premier recording location for Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Crosby, Stills and Nash, the Everly Brothers, Adele, Paul McCartney, Queens of the Stone Age, Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, James Taylor, and many others. The Studio B live room has been basically unchanged since 1958.
A unique feature of Studio B is the “drumbrella,” a variable-height ceiling baffle installed by Allen Sides in 1978 that contains a mystery sound absorption material known only to Allen Sides. It’s mounted on a winch to tailor the acoustics when recording drums, and it’s useful for recording upright bass and other instruments as well.

One of the current projects we're working on here at United Archiving is going through Suzanne Ciani's catalog and archiving the multi-track and mixmasters of her albums. It's been an incredibly exciting and rewarding project to work on. Suzanne is one of the pioneers of electronic based music and what people would term new age music. She truly is one of the most groundbreaking, not only people, but women. It's been incredibly rewarding for me to listen to the music that she has. Everything is a small little symphonies done with moog synthesizers and boo-klas and all of this early synth technology.
Suzanne Ciani - Diva of the Diode is one of the groundbreaking pioneers in modular synthesis and in quadraphonic sound and quadraphonic presentation. Suzanne's project is also an example of several of the benefits of archiving. Suzanne's tapes are old enough that they're at the point where they're beginning to degrade. So there's a need to get them off of older analog formats. But she's also planning to take these things and remix them into Dolby Atmos, and perhaps even do high-resolution stereo remixes.
So Suzanne's project is great because it's really encompassing many of the reasons you do archiving. Her music is of a value in a nature that is historical. We are doing it to preserve the assets before the originals degrade to a point where they can never be played again. It is having them for deep storage for decades to come. It is being able to take these new transferred assets and remonetize them, remix them into new formats, and then be able to reintroduce this music to a younger generation. And it really deserves to be preserved not only currently for her, but for generations to come as well. Bill Smith Chief Archiving Engineer.

United Recording staff engineer/producer Johnny Morgan is helming a project with LA musical performance artist “almighty Opp.” NPR radio station KCRW describes the artist’s monthly public presentation as “a puppet show, psychedelic concert, social experiment, and religious service – all in one.” All puppets are handmade and the songs are written and performed by the founder.
Sessions at United featured almighty Opp founder, known only as “Jeffrey’s Human Persona,” on guitar and vocals. On bass was Mike Watt, an Iggy & The Stooges veteran, plus a member of numerous other bands. “The bass amp was actually pointed away from the rest of the room mics and turned pretty low and recorded with an upside down Neumann U47 FET,” Morgan adds. Sessions engineered and produced by Johnny Morgan, United Recording staff.

Is it too late to say Happy New Year? Too bad — Happy New Year! Now get back to work. ✌️
All of us at United Recording are deeply saddened by the loss of Lisa Roy, President of Rock & Roy Entertainment on New Year’s Eve 2021.
Lisa was a pivotal figure in the music and recording industry with countless friends and colleagues who were touched by her flair for style and professionalism. She was not only a publicist and co-founder of Rock & Roy Entertainment firm but also wore many hats in the music world from marketing, event production, mentoring, fund-raising benefits, showcases for pro audio and M.I. manufacturers, as well as bringing attention to and honoring other women in the industry who are vital in the making of music worldwide.
Born in Montreal, Canada, Lisa’s serious work in the music business began when she co-founded Ground Control Studios, a multi-room facility in L.A. with a dedication to creativity and technology. This led to the start of Rock & Roy Entertainment, a consulting firm for artists and technologists.
Through the years, Lisa’s client’s included such technology brands as AT&T, Dell, Intel and DTS and artists such as Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Alan Parsons, Tori Amos, and Danny Elfman. Lisa was a spark behind such events as the MTV Video Music Awards, Pavarotti and Friends, the annual Audio Engineering Society convention, the Latin Grammy Awards, and The Pensado Awards, among others. Lisa worked closely with top manufacturers in the music instrument and pro audio market sectors, organizing artist relations for such brands as Audio-Technica, Roland and BOSS. Additionally, along with longtime associate Robert Clyne, Lisa co-directed the technical public relations initiatives for the annual Grammy Awards.
We are saddened by this profound loss, but realize that Lisa’s influence in the music industry will be felt for decades to come.

Producer, songwriter, arranger, and keyboardist Kevin Flournoy has been working on several projects at United Recording in Hollywood. In his star-studded career, Flournoy has produced, written, performed, and recorded with artists such as Chaka Khan, Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight, Teena Marie, Jeffrey Osborne, The Pointer Sisters, Jennifer Hudson, The Jazz Crusaders, and Harvey Mason, to name a few.
Flournoy is currently producing and co-writing the first solo album of Amanda Cole, former member of the Grammy-winning group En Vogue.
Flournoy is also composing and producing the first of his two solo instrumental albums. “The first record will focus on my production and writing and will feature several well-known and up-and-coming vocalists. I’ve been asking artists I’ve toured with over the years to work with me on this project. Initially, at United, we tracked musicians for “Caribbean Blue,” a song I co-wrote with Gary Benson and Quino McWhinney, the lead singer of the reggae group Big Mountain. And for my contemporary jazz record, we recorded legendary jazz saxophonist Ronnie Laws as well as guitarist Ramon Stagnaro, both of whom will be featured players on my first single.”

The First Lady of Song, Ella Fitzgerald was the most popular female jazz singer in the United States for more than half a century. Her accolades included fourteen Grammy Awards, the National Medal of Arts, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Lady Ella frequently recorded at United most notably: Get Happy! 1957-1959 Let No Man Write My Epitaph 1960 Whisper Not 1966 Ella At Duke’s Place (with Duke Ellington)1965 Ella Wishes You A Swinging Christmas 1960 The Queen of Jazz appeared in movies and as a guest on popular television shows in the second half of the twentieth century, her musical collaborations with Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and The Ink Spots were some of her most notable acts outside of her solo career. These partnerships produced some of her best-known songs such as "Dream a Little Dream of Me", "Cheek to Cheek", "Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall", and "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)". Surviving a tumultuous childhood, Fitzgerald found stability in musical success with the Chick Webb Orchestra, performing across the country but most often associated with the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. Her rendition of the nursery rhyme "A-Tisket, A-Tasket" helped boost both her and Webb to national fame. After taking over the band when Webb died, Fitzgerald left it behind in 1942 to start her solo career. In 1993, after a career of nearly 60 years, she gave her last public performance. Three years later, she died at the age of 79. #firstladyofsong #ladyella #queenofjazz #ellafitzgerald #scatsinger #jazzmusic #unitedrecording #musichistory #louisarmstrong #dukeellington Copy used from Wikipedia Victor Janacua
