Rebuilding Hope in Altadena

Construction has officially begun on the first Habitat for Humanity home rebuilt after the devastating Eaton Fire — and it’s for the Wood family, longtime residents who lost three generations of housing in the disaster.

San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity is committed to rebuilding at least 25 homes for Altadena fire survivors over the next year, thanks to more than $4.55 million in grants and over 150 volunteers stepping up to help frame the first house.

“We are so happy to help the Wood family come back to the community with our very first house and ADU,” said SGV Habitat CEO Bryan Wong. “This is the first of many houses… we are going to do our absolute best to bring back as many families as we can.”

Michael Eugene Archer—better known as D’Angelo—has passed away after battling cancer, his family announced. Beloved for his raspy yet silky voice and his groundbreaking work in neo-soul, D’Angelo first captured widespread attention with the shirtless “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” video.

A Virginia native, he made a bold imprint on music with his 1995 debut Brown Sugar, delivering classics like “Lady” and “Brown Sugar” and helping define a generation of R&B creative expression. His voice, artistry, and legacy will continue to resonate.

Reimagining the Future with Ethical Al & Ancestral Power
For creator Araba, ethical Al isn't just about tech — it's about data justice.
"If data is the fuel, it needs to be diverse and decolonized," she says. That vision powers her acclaimed short film Afro Algorithms, where a sentient being learns morality from the wisdom of oppressed leaders.
Now, she's taking that vision further with "Ancient Magic", a new virtual museum exhibit premiering June 10 at AWE (Augmented World Expo).
Blending ancestral knowledge with immersive tech, Araba is building new worlds where past and future exist side by side.
Explore the exhibit with headsets or right from your device.
