A few stories from around the world caught my attention recently 🌍🌿

As someone who spends so much time exploring our planet, I’m always interested in the conversations happening around conservation, sustainability, and the communities working to protect the places we love.

Here are a few that I think are worth knowing about:

🌊 Zanzibar: A new marine-governance forum is bringing communities, researchers, businesses, and conservation groups together to help protect an incredibly important marine landscape.

🌿 Indigenous conservation: I’m encouraged to see Indigenous knowledge, rights, and participation becoming a bigger part of conservation training and decision-making.

💧 Lake Titicaca: Women leaders from Peru and Bolivia are working together across borders to strengthen water governance and protect their shared watershed.

🐍 Reptile leather trade: New research raises an interesting conversation around sustainability while also highlighting ongoing concerns about animal welfare, traceability, and enforcement.

🌱 Mega-events & nature: UNEP is looking at whether huge events like the World Cup can actually create opportunities for better transportation, restoration, infrastructure, and environmental planning.

These stories are a reminder that protecting our planet isn’t just about the places themselves, it’s about the people, policies, and decisions shaping their future.

Which one caught your interest the most? I’d love to hear your thoughts below. 👇

🥾 7 pieces of hiking gear I actually use

I’ve learned that packing for a hike isn’t about bringing everything I own. It’s about knowing what I’ll actually reach for when I’m out there.

Here are a few things I rarely hit the trail without:

💡 Headlamp + puffy jacket
A headlamp has saved me more than once when a hike took longer than expected. I also love having a lightweight puffy because mountain weather can change quickly, even on a sunny day.

💧 Water bottle + chapstick + sunglasses
These are my small trail essentials. Staying hydrated is a given, but I’ve learned that dry lips and bright sun can make a beautiful hike a lot less enjoyable.

🧢 Sun visor + bandana
These are especially helpful on exposed trails. I love having a little extra sun protection while keeping cool and comfortable.

🔪 Knife + emergency kit
I hope I never need the emergency kit, but I’d much rather have it and not need it than wish I had packed it.

💦 Water filter
On longer adventures, a water filter gives me another option for staying hydrated when I’m near a reliable water source.

🏕️ And sometimes, keeping it simple is the best choice.
I don’t think you need a huge pack full of gear to enjoy the outdoors. The goal is to bring what helps you feel prepared, comfortable and confident.

🎒 What’s one piece of hiking gear you never leave home without?

🌿 Travel is about more than the places we visit. It is also about protecting the places, wildlife, and communities that make those journeys possible.

This week, I’m taking a closer look at some important changes affecting U.S. public lands and wildlife, from endangered species protections in Florida to wildfire restrictions, flooding closures, and ongoing recovery at the Grand Canyon’s North Rim.

These stories are a reminder that conditions can change quickly, and responsible travel means staying informed before we head out. Whether you’re hiking, camping, or exploring a national park, a little preparation can make a big difference. 🌎

I’ll keep sharing the travel news, updates, tips, and stories I think are worth knowing.

POV: You found a new trail and immediately want to hike it. 👀

Before I lace up my boots, there are a few things I always want to know first.
When was the trail last walked? How much elevation is there? What’s the weather doing? Is there water? Can I actually get to the trailhead? And what are other hikers saying about the conditions?

Because sometimes the details you almost skip are the ones that can completely change the hike.

A little research doesn’t make an adventure less exciting. It helps me show up prepared and spend more time enjoying the trail.

Save this for the next time you find a trail you’ve never hiked before. 🥾

Before your next hike, let’s talk trail etiquette! 🥾🌲

The outdoors belongs to all of us, and a few simple habits can make every trail safer, quieter, cleaner, and more enjoyable.

Here are some reminders I always like to keep in mind:

🥾 Know who has the right of way and make room for others when the trail gets narrow.

👥 Keep your group together without taking up the entire trail.

🐕 Keep dogs under control and follow the rules for the trail you are visiting.

🌿 Pack out what you bring in and leave nature exactly where you found it.

🎧 Keep the volume down so everyone can enjoy the sounds of the outdoors.

🚶 Stay on marked trails and avoid cutting switchbacks that can contribute to erosion.

🦌 Give wildlife plenty of space. Admire them from a distance and never feed or disturb them.

Most importantly, **leave the trail better than you found it.💚

These may seem like small things, but they add up. Being a responsible hiker helps protect the places we love and keeps the outdoors welcoming for everyone.

Save this carousel for your next adventure and send it to your hiking buddy! 🌎🥾

I came to Channel Islands National Park expecting beautiful scenery, but I left with a whole new appreciation for these incredible islands. 🌊🌎

Just off the coast of Southern California, the Channel Islands feel surprisingly remote. No highways, no hotels, and no restaurants connecting the islands. Just rugged cliffs, wild beaches, unique wildlife, and ecosystems shaped by thousands of years of isolation.

On Santa Cruz Island, I kayaked through sea caves, explored the coastline, and joined conservation volunteers working to remove invasive plants and restore native habitat. It was amazing to see how much work goes into protecting an ecosystem that can look untouched at first glance.

The ocean was just as incredible. The journey across the Santa Barbara Channel gave me opportunities to spot sea lions, dolphins, and even a blue whale. Beneath the surface, giant kelp forests provide habitat for thousands of marine species.

Then I headed to Santa Rosa Island, where everything felt even more wild. I hiked through windswept landscapes, followed the Torrey Pine Trail, and saw one of the rarest trees in the world growing naturally on the island.

What really stayed with me was the conservation story. These islands have experienced decades of human impact, but restoration efforts are helping native species return and giving these ecosystems a chance to recover.

That is what makes places like Channel Islands National Park so special. You are not just visiting a beautiful landscape. You are experiencing a living ecosystem and seeing why protecting it matters.

Save this carousel if you are planning to go to a national park! 🌎🥾

Where we stay matters. 🌿

When I travel, I love finding hotels that make sustainability part of the experience, not just a line on their website.

That’s why I put together a few sustainable stays worth knowing about in this carousel. From energy and water conservation to local food, waste reduction, thoughtful design, and protecting the surrounding environment, these are the things I look for when choosing where to stay.

And honestly, it’s about more than bamboo toothbrushes. 😉

No hotel is perfect, but I believe in supporting properties that are making measurable progress and investing in the places and communities around them.

Every booking is a vote for the kind of tourism we want to see more of.

Save this for your next trip, share it with a fellow traveler, and tell me: **What’s your favorite sustainable hotel?** 🌎

When people ask me how to become a better hiker, they usually expect one answer: “Do more cardio.”

And while endurance is incredibly important, I’ve learned that hiking takes more than just a strong set of lungs. It takes strength, stability, and the ability to keep moving when the trail gets challenging. 🥾

Over the years, I’ve realized that cardio and strength training each play a different role in helping me feel stronger outdoors.

❤️ Cardio is my engine.
It helps me hike longer distances, handle elevation gain, recover between steep sections, and maintain energy throughout a long day on the trail.

💪 Strength is my foundation.
Stronger legs help me climb more efficiently. A stronger core helps me stay balanced on uneven terrain. Stronger muscles help me carry my pack, handle technical sections, and feel more confident when the trail gets tough.

One thing many hikers don’t realize is that downhill sections can be just as demanding as the climb. Descending puts a lot of stress on your quads, glutes, and knees. Strength training helps my body absorb that impact and gives me better control when navigating steep descents.

It’s also helped me build stability around my hips, knees, ankles, and core, areas that work hard with every step on uneven ground. It doesn’t make me injury-proof, but it helps my body better handle the demands of the adventures I love.

My ideal training mix looks something like this:

🏃 Cardio to build endurance
🏋️ Strength training to build power and stability
🥾 Hiking to practice real-world movement
🧘 Mobility and recovery to keep my body ready for the next adventure

The goal isn’t to choose between cardio and strength.

The strongest hikers I know train both, because the mountains ask for both.

Train for the adventure, not just the summit. ⛰️

What’s your go-to training style right now: cardio or strength?
