CNN, you couldn't find one media credential for the black press of america?! I call BS and racism on that!!

Press freedom is supposed to be one of the core features of America's democracy! It's been made abundantly clear that that is not true for the Black Press of America. In the presidential debate tonight hosted by CNN in Atlanta, over six hundred media credentials have been issued, even to media outlets that are not in the united states! That will not vote or have a true voice in this election cycle. Yet, CNN who is supposed to be the most trusted name and news denied Black-Owned Media credentials to cover the debate.

I know a little something about being denied media credentials to cover media events, including those that are made up are predominantly black people! Even though my career as a photojournalist has been second to none. My advocacy to have equal opportunities to cover media events damaged my career tremendously! As I sit writing this today, I'm a pariah when it comes to mainstream owned media outlets. I am not welcomed when it comes to covering media events by those that have been my colleagues for almost 40 years! If you
were to ask me, if I had to do it all over again, would I do it any different? My answer would be No! Knowing what I know that it is a lie that institutional racism, especially in media does not exist in America.

In the TV series Star Trek they used to say that Space was the final frontier. I have said over forty years equality for the Black Press of America in media and true equal rights and equality for Black Americans in America is the final frontier! Anyone who believes in what is right and just for everyone should find what CNN is doing. And a lot of other media outlets and those who put on events denying the Black Press equal opportunity to cover them a travesty!

For years I have kept my piece in regards to media. Knowing that those who wish to deny others rights don't ever stop trying to! I suppose that's why I've continued to hear the voice of God getting louder in my ear. Saying I gave you a job to do, its time you got back to doing it!⏳

Solar Eclipse 2024 as from the Ladera Heights section of Los Angeles County adjacent to Los Angeles City. I enjoyed shooting the 2024 solar Eclipse. But because of the location on the West Coast. We only got to see a portion of it. In my location, it took about two hours and 15 minutes for the Moon to pass across the front of the sun and clear it. Now I’m going to explain to you why I was in so much pain shooting the solar eclipse. Sunday morning, which was yesterday, I was preparing to go spend 5 hours as a bodyguard at perhaps the most famous church in Los Angeles CA. First AME Better known as FAME and now FAME-US. As I was putting on my cowboy boots, which are part of my brand. Because I have a growth on the side of my foot as part of a medical condition that will be taken care of in May. It was difficult to pull the boots on.

Because they are expensive boots and expensive boots wear lot tighter than cheap boots. As I was straining to pull the boot up over the knot on the side of my foot, I felt a muscle pull in my back, ouch and ha at the same time! So, this morning when I got up it was extremely sore, and it is as I write this post. Some of you will say that's what happens when you start to get old. Some of you will say, why don't you put on regular shoes? And I will say I'm a cowboy and I will continue to wear cowboy boots as long as I can, ha! The thing is, once I have the surgery, I will have to wear low cut shoes. Except if I can get past my manager and my career consultant, and put on my cowboy boots ha, ha!😂😂⏳

This afternoon I'd like to make a special dedication to a very special lady Ms. Valeria Howard- Cunningham. The owner and the producer of the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo. Earlier this year I contacted Valeria regarding a scholarship that I had started in the name of her late husband Lu Vason who started the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo “The Greatest Show on Dirt”. It gives Black Cowboys and Cowgirls the opportunity to participate in one of America's greatest and most historical sports rodeo. I met Lu Vason when I first came to Los Angeles. I was the Chief photographer for the Los Angeles Sentinel newspaper.

Lu gave me the opportunity to cover his rodeos. Later on, because of the work that he had done to make the playing field more level in the area of rodeo for Black Cowboys and Cowgirls. I asked his permission to start a scholarship in his name and he gave me permission to do so. Lu passed away several years ago and Valeria decided to keep the rodeo going instead of walking away, which would have been easy for her to do. However, she recognized how important it was for Black Cowboys and Cowgirls to have a place to participate and show their love of rodeo.

When I spoke to her, I told her about the scholarship. I hadn't said much about it and asked her for her permission to keep it going. She liked the idea and said that she would do what she could to help me. Then she went a step further with it and told me to send her some information regarding the scholarship which I did. A few weeks ago, she sent me an e-mail message and we spoke on the phone. She had taken the time out of her busy schedule to make the information I sent to her read the way it should.

I was overwhelmed and very grateful for what she did. When we spoke, she said that she was going to put it in the program. That it had been laid down and it was nice. I had every intention of attending the rodeo this year to see her in person and show my gratitude to her. But this year life had other plans so I could not attend the rodeo. My sister, Acynthia Villery Saturday afternoon before the first performance sent me a photo of the page in the book. When I looked at it and read it, I became very emotional.

Sometimes life will cause us to cry tears of sorrow, and sometimes life will cause us to cry tears of joy and gratefulness. The tears Saturday were tears of joy and gratefulness. I was overwhelmed to see how thoughtful Valeria was. First, she took a full-page that she could have used to raise money with advertisements. (It cost a lot of money to run a national rodeo) Secondly, when I looked at the page, I could tell that she had spent some money to have a special logo made for the scholarship and award. And with her permission, it will become the official scholarship and award logo. That is why I say with the passage of time. You truly begin to understand how fortunate you are to have people treat you kindly knowing that they didn't have to.

To Valeria Howard-Cunningham thank you. I will be forever grateful to you for what you did and what you will do. I am also grateful that you are a strong and compassionate woman. That you chose to continue the rodeo. I hope all that participate, and the staff understand how fortunate they are to have you as the owner and the producer. For like I said, you could have walked away, but you didn't! I'm also grateful that you have as a partner, Margo LaDrew. And that you have my beautiful sister Acynthia with you as well. And helped her make history as a black female rodeo announcer.

It is black women with the strength and the character that you all have. That made me decide for my speaking career. To have a management team made up of women like you. God only knows how grateful I truly am for you. And everyone who is helping me on my journey. Yes. I am attempting to emulate Lu Vason you and others whose shoulders I stand on. To give young black men and women an opportunity if they dream of being photojournalists and sports photojournalists. The opportunity and the training to do so I thank you.

I hope you already know that whatever you need me to do for you, I will do it. May God continue to bless you your family your rodeo staff and the participants. And you continue to provide black Cowboys and Cowgirls with a place to participate in the sport that they love. You truly do know and understand the meaning of the words “The saddest words ever said or pinned are surely, “It might have been.”

I promised God on a railroad track 55 years ago that if he would let me live my dreams. I would help others live their dreams. He has permitted me to live my dreams, and I continue to live my dreams. He is also elevating me to even greater Heights than I imagined when I daydreamed as a little boy.

My profession as a photojournalist has permitted me to change the course of history for some from a negative course to a positive course. It has also helped me to help others get justice for the Injustice committed against them. Photojournalism is one of the greatest professions in the world to be in. And so to keep my promise to God and help others who look like me. Who are often denied the opportunity to be a part of the great professional of photojournalism.

I established Minority Photo Journalism Institute to teach young black men and women who want to be photojournalist the profession. And I want you all to remember this, the saddest words ever said or pinned are surely I could have been! Those words are even more sad when someone could have helped someone become what they wanted to be but didn't.

tribute to Black Legends in L.A. Media

LOS ANGELES – Tavis Smiley, host of “Tavis Smiley” on KBLA Talk 1580 AM, presented a total of $20,000 in scholarships to the National Association of Black Journalists/Los Angeles and the Minority Photo-Journalism Institute. Both organizations play prominent roles in helping African Americans interested in journalism and communications pursue their dreams and explore potential career opportunities.

“The National Association of Black Journalists – Los Angeles Chapter and the Minority Photo-Journalism Institute are making a tangible difference in our community by helping students pursue careers in journalism and communications,” stated Tavis Smiley. “KBLA Talk 1580 strongly believes in enlightening, empowering and encouraging tomorrow’s reporters, editors and potentially talk radio hosts. Hopefully, our scholarships make a difference.”

The scholarship donations were raised at KBLA Talk 1580’s February 28, 2023, Black History Month luncheon in tribute to Black legends in Los Angeles media.

“Today’s $10,000 scholarship will help aspiring Black journalists in Los Angeles get the education and the skills they need to encourage more balanced news coverage of our community,” stated Jarrett Hill, president of the National Association of Black Journalists – Los Angeles Chapter. “Thanks to Tavis Smiley and KBLA for their generous contribution.”

“MPJI thanks Tavis Smiley and KBLA 1580 for their generous contribution to help us continue to impact the lives of young men and women from marginalized communities in a positive way who wish to learn the profession of photography and photojournalism,” added Haywood Galbreath, founder of MPJI.
