Delighted to see a new review for Lev Raphael's 8th Nick Hoffman mystery, ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY LIE, recently out from ReQ***red Tales in paperback.

https://outinprintblog.wordpress.com/2025/10/20/assault-with-a-deadly-lie-lev-raphael-requeered-tales/

Successful professor Nick Hoffman's secure, happy, college-town life changes forever after a nightmarish encounter with police. Can someone accuse them of a crime, then a SWAT team shows up at their door and drags them away? Tension and paranoia build as Nick and his partner Stefan Borowski face an escalating series of threats that lead to a brutal and stunning confrontation.

“This splendidly written story of innocence, intrigue, and invisible enemies waltzes beautifully between poignancy and terror. Better still is the question that will haunt readers: Could this happen to me?” — P.J. PARRISH

Thanks, Jerry L. Wheeler for all you and your team do.

Richard Stevenson (pseudonym of Richard Lipez), is the author of the Don Strachey private eye series. A former editorial writer at The Berkshire Eagle, Lipez reviewed mysteries and thrillers for The Washington Post. His reporting, reviews, and fiction appeared in Newsday, The Boston Globe, The Atlantic, Harper's, and many other publications.

In addition to DEATH TRICK (with a new introduction by Michael Nava), ReQ***red Tales is issuing 16 other novels in the series, including CHASING REMBRANDT, the final Strachey book, published posthumously. This summer, we issued STRACHEY'S FOLLY and TONGUE TIED in paperback.

STRACHEY'S FOLLY has the Washington Mall AIDS quilt display at its story center; TONGUE TIED features a radio shock jock a la Howard Stern. As with all of his novels, topical events are a hook that Stevenson riffs on with great entertainment. Viewed collectively, it's a mini history of American gay life over 30 years.

The series is in e-book at Kindle Unlimited and in print (see the QR code) or order from your favorite indie bookseller.

Jay B. Laws (1958-1992), Texas-born and long-time San Francisco playwright and fiction writer, had a number of successes in his brief life (he died of AIDS at age 34). In 1986, his full-length play, “A Night for Colored Glass” was produced in Los Angeles and won a playwriting prize. His first novel “Steam” was nominated for a Lambda Award and found widespread critical and reader acclaim. And shortly before his death, his second novel, "The Unfinished" was accepted for publication by Alyson Books.

ReQ***red Tales reissued both novels in 2019 but here's a shout-out to the lesser known THE UNFINISHED. Currently available only as an e-book, check out Kindle, Kobo, Nook, Apple and the usual suspects.

In the comments, the full-length obit that appeared in The Bay Area Reporter, unusually long given how many deaths were occurring weekly back then with no truly effective drugs yet available. It's a measure of his stature back in the day.

Vincent Virga's GAYWYCK, the first gay gothic romance now back in print and ebook with a new foreword by Damon Suede. Robert, a handsome scholar, is chosen by Donough Ga***rd, the wealthy lord of a Long Island estate, Gaywyck, to be librarian ... with benefits? As love blossoms, ghosts of the past threaten to destroy them both.

Joseph Hansen's 1982 novel, BACKTRACK, is a remarkable tale of Alan Tarr tracing his late father's last days. Was he murdered? Estranged since he was six months old, Alan learns his dad, a successful mid-tier movie actor in California, was also gay. After a horrible accident, Alan himself is vulnerable, both legs broken, hiding in a ramshackle seashore cottage ... is he, too, under threat by the murderer?

Lev Raphael's eight novel in his Nick Hoffman series, ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY LIE, finds the university professor besieged by a SWAT team at his front door. Who is out to destroy Nick and his partner Stefan Borowski? Paranoia and tension build as Nick races to uncover the villain.

When we started out in April 2019, a trio of new online friends which make up the founders of ReQ***red Tales never dreamed the venture would grow into the (modestly stated) stature it has achieved. We are immensely proud of every single release. All titles are available as affordable, instantly available e-books from Kindle; many from other vendors such as Kobo, Nook, Apple and library vendors; and 70 titles are available as quality trade paperbacks. Well-kept secret: a select number of titles are available in gift edition hard covers.

What does that look like? Here's a glimpse at one of our sets of shelves.

All of the print titles are available from our own US bookshop but can be ordered by bookshops and chains in countries worldwide.
