In 1978, Subaru wanted to sell a pickup in America but faced a brutal 25% "Chicken Tax" tariff on imported trucks so Subaru's engineers did the only logical thing. They bolted two backward facing plastic seats with grab handles and seatbelts into the cargo bed, walked up to the NHTSA, and said "this is a passenger car." The NHTSA had no choice but to agree, the BRAT sailed through customs at the 2.5% passenger car rate instead of 25%, and Subaru saved a fortune.

Mazda's CEO just used the word "unprecedented" to describe the overhaul coming to the CX-60, CX-70, CX-80, and CX-90 since missing their 200,000 unit global target by 50,000 vehicles last year.

Honda and Nissan officially signed a joint software development agreement on August 31, 2026 to build a shared operating system, ECUs, middleware, and vehicle control software for cars launching in fiscal 2029, which is the smaller, smarter version of the full merger that collapsed in February when Nissan refused to become a Honda subsidiary.

The practical upside for drivers is that a shared OS means "over the air" updates that add features after you've already bought the car, similar to Tesla.

J.D. Power just surveyed 68,084 owners of 2026 model year vehicles and found that 35% of people whose cars have a passenger screen have never once turned it on and only 6% use it every drive. This is a remarkable data point for a feature automakers keep adding as a premium selling point. The passenger screen also generated 21.3 problems per 100 vehicles, making it one of the most complaint heavy technologies in new cars.
