The United States of America is known as the world’s melting pot, and every year on October 28 National Immigrants Day gives us a reason to reflect on just how unique that distinction is among the world’s 195 sovereign nations. As Americans, we are proud of our long history of welcoming immigrants from all parts of the world and value their contributions that add zest to our nation’s blend of cultures, customs, and traditions. ❤️🌱

.
Inspiring Women Spotlight 🌟
Deb Haaland: Entrepreneur and one of the first two Native American women in the US House of Representatives.

The daughter of two veterans, Haaland is a 35th-generation New Mexican and a member of the Laguna Pueblo people. After moving around as a military kid, she put herself through college and gave birth to her daughter four days before graduating in 1994. The following year, she launched her own company, Pueblo Salsa, which she ran while caring for a baby and attending law school at the same time. (Wow.) Haaland has always been open about the challenges that she faced as a single mom and Native American — her official US House bio notes that both she and her daughter are still paying off student loans, and she’s also said that if she’d scored five points higher on the bar exam, her life would probably have gone a different way. Instead, she became the first woman elected to the Laguna Development Corporation’s board of directors and began advocating for environmentally friendly business practices. That led to a political path, and she became the first Native American woman to lead a state political party before successfully winning a US House seat in 2018. As a representative, Haaland has introduced several bills to address the crisis of missing and murdered indigenous women.

“I’m always gonna fight for folks. I think it’s any government’s obligation to make the lives of people better. That’s why we pay our taxes. We want good roads, we want solid bridges. We want nice playgrounds for kids to play in. We want safe communities. We don’t want our neighbors to go hungry. I know what a nice neighborhood is like, and I want people to be able to find success.”

Activist Spotlight: Rachel Cargle 💗
After moving to New York City, Black feminist activist Rachel Cargle (@rachel.cargle) wanted to keep a connection with her native Akron, Ohio. Out of this desire, Elizabeth’s Bookshop and Writing Center was born. Elizabeth’s is designed to celebrate marginalized voices and will be a cultural center for the Akron community once indoor gathering is safe again. All proceeds of this social activists project go towards Cargle’s nonprofit the Loveland Foundation that makes mental healthcare accessible to Black women and girls.

“We try to give readers a map for ways they can bring more marginalized voices into their bookshelves.” - Rachel Cargle

By @theequalityinstitute ❤️
There are four main drivers of violence against women (VAW). These are expressions of gender inequality, which is the root cause of VAW (check out our previous post on this for more info on the 'gendered drivers').

To prevent VAW, we must address these drivers and gender inequality more broadly, and we can do this by taking action in the ways outlined above.

It’s important to remember that there are other intersecting drivers of violence for women of different identities, which are not listed in this post but are no less important in the path to an equal and safe future for all.

This post is specifically focused on violence against women. Research shows violence against women occurs at disproportionately high rates and is overwhelmingly perpetrated by men. However, it’s important to remember that people of all genders experience violence. There is a lack of research on how gender diverse people experience violence, and we must continue to build the evidence base in these areas to better understand and address this violence.

Slide content: Adapted from ‘Change The Story,' a framework for the prevention of VAW in Australia, developed by Our Watch, ANROWS, and VicHealth. For more, visit @theequalityinstitute and click the link in their bio.

Behind the scenes while filming a project on Child Marriage in the United States. Child marriage occurs when one or both of the parties to the marriage are below the age of 18. Approximately 248,000 children were married in the U.S. between 2000 and 2010. The vast majority were girls wed to adult men, many much older.

will always be there. Peace means solving these differences

“I wrote this a while ago to highlight the progress we need to make for both boys and girls in mental health. Today is #womensequalityday in the USA and I think improving how we treat and care for our sons as well as our daughters contributes to a better future for them all. What do you think?

I made this video some time ago but now the scenes from Afghanistan are reminding us how far the world has to go.”

“The road to democracy may be winding and is like a river taking many curves, but eventually the river will reach the ocean.”– Chen Shui-bian.

International Day of Democracy on September 15 allows us the opportunity to celebrate and appreciate our democratic society. It’s very easy for people who live in a free society to take their freedoms for granted. Yet, when freedom is absent, life includes unimaginable challenges that are often incomprehensible.

Today, let’s reflect on the history of democracy around the world, thank those who influenced the development of our government, and look for opportunities to promote and protect our own nation’s democracy.
