At first, nobody respected the soldiers… but when disaster struck, everyone called for them. 🇺🇸🌊

A peaceful, sunny day suddenly turned into a nightmare. Heavy rain, lightning, thunder, and a gigantic wave of water overwhelmed the entire city.

As everything became flooded and people were trapped, everyone began crying out for help. That’s when American soldiers and rescue teams arrived by helicopters and boats, racing against time to save people and animals.

In the darkest moments, the very people who once failed to respect them now saw them as their only hope.

Sadly, not everyone made it… 🕊️

Sometimes, people only realize someone’s value when they need them the most.

Andrew Carpenter was born on June 14, 1983, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to parents Morris and Jill Carpenter. The family moved to Maryland in 1983, when Andrew was three months old, and settled in Silver Spring. Andrew was a very precocious baby, learning to walk at 9 months and riding his first two-wheeler at two. Andrew welcomed his little sister to the family on December 23, 1986. He loved his sister, and his first words upon seeing her were, “Oh, look at her little fingers and toes!” In 1989, the family moved to Westminster and lived there until 1996. In his younger years, he played football, did Taekwondo, and participated in Boy Scouts.

Andrew graduated from high school in 2001 and promptly joined the Marines. He was sent to boot camp at Parris Island and assigned to the 1/5 Marine Division at Camp Pendleton in California. Because of the tragedy of September 11, 2001, the war in Iraq began, and Andrew was sent to Iraq. The 1/5 was the first into the war, and Andrew saw his first combat.

In the years following the war, Andrew dealt with many demons due to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, for which he was finally given full Veteran Disability. In 2010, Andrew discovered that he had a three-year-old daughter named Nadia. He was enthralled with this little beauty and took great pride. In spite of all his many injuries, illnesses, and hospital stays, he met Kaitlyn Emblidge in 2010 and married her that October. They resided in Ashburn, Virginia. In November 2010, they found out they were expecting a baby, and together they had a beautiful baby girl named Zoe in July 2011. Andrew loved his daughters very much. He loved this newfound role of being a father, and despite his injuries, he worked hard at being there for his little family.

Andrew loved working on cars, doing outdoor activities with Zoe, and all types of music. He loved to dance and clown around and loved to embarrass Kate because Andrew never really cared what people thought about him. He was a very loved husband, son, father, and Marine.

Final rest: Arlington National Cemetery

“I lost my hero. Major Ronald James “Pete” Peterson — my dad — passed away after a long, courageous fight with pulmonary fibrosis from his four tours in Vietnam.

He graduated from Manistee High School in 1962 and, not long after, made a life-altering decision — he quietly took the ferry across Lake Michigan to Wisconsin and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, without telling his very disapproving mother. That bold, determined choice marked the beginning of a remarkable journey.

In the Corps, Pete found his calling. He excelled quickly, rising through the enlisted ranks with distinction. By 1967, he was a Staff Sergeant stationed in Key West, Florida — where fate introduced him to Sandra Kershaw. They married that same year and soon faced a pivotal moment: Pete was selected for promotion to Gunnery Sergeant in under seven years — an extraordinary achievement. Presented with a choice between the drill field and submitting his Warrant Officer package. It was approved, and in the spring of 1969, he and his very pregnant wife moved to Quantico, Virginia. That July, I was born.

The next 18 years would bring countless deployments, duty stations, and temporary assignments as Pete continued his ascent through the Warrant Officer ranks. Eventually, his leadership, knowledge, and character earned him a commission as a Limited Duty Officer. He served with unwavering commitment, rising to the rank of Major — a testament to his grit and professionalism, and to the respect he earned from both peers and subordinates.

In 1987, after 25 years of faithful and honorable service, Pete retired from the United States Marine Corps as a Major. A Mustang officer who had risen from the enlisted ranks, he represented the very best of what the Corps stands for: discipline, courage, and quiet excellence.

He was tough, proud, and fiercely loyal. But to me, he was just Dad. The man who always had my back. The man who taught me about honor, grit, and standing tall no matter what life throws at you.

He’s gone now — but I know he’s found peace in the Halls of Valhalla, surrounded by his brothers-in-arms.

Rest easy, Dad. You’ve earned it. -Corey Peterson
