This month our Heartbeats Circle Open Mic falls on the 55th anniversary of the Chicano Moratorium.
We are honored to hold space at the Libros Lincoln Heights; an independent bookstore that lives across the street from Lincoln High School, the historic place where the Walkouts originated.

It is with great pleasure that we feature a new generation of creatives, social justice Poets, and Songwriters, who stand by their truth and their word.

we started on the boardwalk

Venice Beach, CA - November 2009 - Friends and Writers, Jessica M. Wilson and Christina Granados went out to the boardwalk to find a good spot to lay down their milk crate.

“Why not a Poet?”

A huge Doors fan, Jessica frequented the Venice Beach Boardwalk...whether to take in the ocean view, admire the Jim Morrison mural on 18th and Speedway, or to buy unique art from local artists. Along her journey up the walk, she encountered a large crowd around a shouting man. Like any other curious being, Jessica wanted to see what the hype was all about. She made her way closer, digging through the crowd, to see a single man, standing on top of an ice chest. What was he shouting? They were messages of religious belief...rhetoric of the sort. Jessica took it in and huffed about the messages he was pushing... However, was taken back by how many ears he flocked... she was even intrigued. She saw how he opened up his ice chest, to hand out the booklets he had about what he was preaching about... connecting with people.

No one stopped him. People took the time to listen to him.
