Industry trade outlets reported in late January that DistroKid is exploring a potential sale at a valuation of around $2 billion or more. While nothing has been officially announced, this reflects a broader trend: consolidation in digital music infrastructure.

When ownership of distribution platforms shifts, artists may eventually see:

• Changes in pricing
• Policy updates
• Platform restructuring
• Deeper integration into larger corporate ecosystems

Distribution is no longer just about getting music online. It’s about long-term catalog positioning and infrastructure.

Behind the scenes at Likha Music International

This week included:
• A working call with SourceAudio to align on platform updates and future tools
• Internal discussions around catalog infrastructure and long-term scalability
• Continued evaluation of programs that support rights management and artist revenue

Much of our work happens quietly, but it’s ongoing and intentional. Building steadily. Moving deliberately.

Deal & Price
Universal Music Group (UMG), through its Virgin Music unit, is acquiring Downtown Music Holdings for $775 million, a deal announced in December 2024 .

What Downtown Does
Downtown powers key infrastructure—platforms like FUGA, CD Baby, Curve, Songtrust, and Downtown Music Publishing—used by over 5,000 business clients and 4 million creators for music distribution, rights management, and royalties .

Regulatory Timeline
The European Commission launched an antitrust probe in April 2025 (Case M.11956) and must make a preliminary decision by July 22, 2025, which could lead to approval, conditional approval, or a deeper investigation .

Critics’ Concerns
More than 200 independent label execs and trade bodies (like IMPALA, A2IM, the European Composer & Songwriter Alliance) warn that UMG already controls 40%+ of Europe’s recorded music market, and gaining Downtown would further entrench that dominance .

Key Risks Highlighted

1. Infrastructure control: Independents fear they'll be forced to rely on UMG’s platforms to reach audiences.

2. Data access: UMG could glean strategic pricing, performance, and rights data about independents through Downtown .

UMG’s Response
UMG (via Virgin Music co‑CEOs Nat Pastor & JT Myers) claims the deal will expand services, not limit them. They insist UMG’s market share has remained stable, that independent market share has grown, and pledge to maintain data privacy and transparency .

The EU is under pressure from independent labels to conduct a Phase II antitrust review before signing off on UMG’s takeover of Downtown. The main concern: centralizing control over vital music infrastructure and sensitive data could threaten competition, innovation, and creative diversity.

Next milestone: July 22 decision by the European Commission.

If you haven’t heard of them, Downtown works with artists like John Lennon, Hans Zimmer, Wu-Tang Clan, Beyoncé and tons of indie creators around the world. They help collect royalties, land music placements in film/TV, and support companies in a big way.

It currently contains 10 albums 🎶 with about 95 tracks. 🎵Give it a listen🎧. Give us feedback🗒️. And share if you may. But for the owners of the album, it's a must that you share😁

Still working on ⬆️ uploading more daily, working on metadata, art work, PRO registration, 🪢ironing out the kinks in our workflow, all that good stuff. So to our other composers, artists, producers around the 🌏 globe, don't feel left out. They are in no particular order.

A lot of blood🩸, sweat 💦 and tears😭 poured in to these songs. We've seen many of them born from an instrumental🎻🎹🎸, to the addition of the lyrics🎶 and melodies, into a full-blown song.
