On the night of July 4, 1969, Darlene Ferrin, who was 22 years old, and Michael Mageau, who was 19 years old, were spending time together in Darlene's car at Blue Rock Springs Park in Vallejo, California. It was a quiet spot, often visited by couples looking for a peaceful place to talk.
As they sat in the car, a vehicle drove up and parked nearby. The person inside that car was the Zodiac Killer. He walked up to Darlene's car, shining a bright flashlight into their eyes to blind them. Without any warning, he began shooting through the car window.
Darlene was hit multiple times and died from her injuries. Michael was also shot but managed to survive. Even though he was in a lot of pain, Michael was able to give the police some information about the attacker. He described the Zodiac as a man with a heavy build, around 5'8" to 5'9" tall, with short, light brown hair. However, the description was not very detailed, making it hard for the police to identify the killer.
The attack at Blue Rock Springs Park was the Zodiac Killer's second confirmed attack. It happened just months after the first murders at Lake Herman Road. This second attack spread more fear throughout the area, as it became clear that a dangerous and unpredictable killer was on the loose.
