Ginny Dornheggen wasn't carrying a r***e when the attack began.

She was carrying responsibility for the wounded men under her care.

In Vietnam, she served as an Army nurse with the 67th Evacuation Hospital, where helicopters arrived day and night bringing soldiers torn apart by war. Long shifts, endless casualties, and the constant pressure of keeping people alive became part of everyday life.
Then came the night of January 6, 1970.
Without warning, enemy mortar rounds struck an am******on dump near the hospital.
The sky lit up.
The ground shook.
Windows shattered.
Shrapnel tore through the wards.
For a moment, instinct took over.
Like everyone else, Ginny dropped to the floor and sought cover.
Then she thought about her patients.
Young soldiers lay helpless in their beds.
Some couldn't walk.
Some couldn't even move.
If the attack continued, they had nowhere to go.
Ginny climbed out from cover.
Two other nurses joined her.
Together, they moved through the chaos while explosions continued around them.
They pulled wounded soldiers from beds.
Lowered them onto cots.
Covered them with mattresses.
Protected every patient they could reach.
American soldiers.
Allied troops.

Even wounded enemy prisoners.
In that moment, none of it mattered.
Only the lives in front of them.
The attack eventually ended.
The patients survived.

Ginny survived too.
But like many Vietnam veterans, the war followed her home.
For years, the memories remained.
The explosions.
The fear.

The responsibility.
The knowledge that lives depended on decisions made in seconds.
History often remembers those who carried r***es.

Far fewer remember the nurses who ran toward danger with nothing but courage and a determination to save others.
